so I have heard from a few people that you can "split" Amazon Prime with other people.
the website says it has to be household members?
do you share Prime with anyone? how does this work?

Let's just say I know someone who's 2 daughters families and 2 sisters share the same prime account meaning there are 5 different last names and 5 different addresses and god knows how many credit cards associated with the account. The only thing necessary for this sharing is willingness to share username and password and everyone's ability to use the credit cards (this does some times lead to someone using someone else's credit card). This works great if you are kindle users cause then you can have everyone's books (this account has upwards of a dozen devices associated with it). I think amazon knows and doesn't care.

@Ms.Badger: oh! so they're "unofficially" sharing? lol! I let someone have my username and pw to share kindle books as well.
I was curious more about the "official" sharing - where it's a split membership, so you don't have to cross usernames, passwords or credit cards?

No split membership. My husband is on my Prime account but we live in the same household. I sometimes buy things for my mom using my Prime and have it shipped to her.

Actually, you don't need to share an account to share Prime (and you shouldn't). You can add people to your prime account if they are "family members". You go into your prime settings and send them an email through the system, once they accept they can use it. This doesn't work for Prime video though, just the original account owner can use that.

@Mrs.Someone: that seems to line up with what the description on the site says:
Share Your Amazon Prime Benefits
Free or paid Amazon Prime members can share their shipping benefits with up to four additional family members living in the same household. If you purchase a Prime membership for a small business, you may invite up to four co-workers to shop with this corporate account. Other Amazon Prime membership benefits such as Prime Instant Video and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library can't be shared.
So that said, let's say Person A has Prime. and invites me. can I have a separate shipping and billing address? or would that kind of kick you off/nullify your ability to use it, because it's supposed to be "household" members?

@Mrs.Someone: wait, so you don't share accounts, they just get the benefit of free shipping?? so like right now my mom & i each have prime accounts because i don't like the idea of anyone being able to see my orders, wish lists, or browsing history, could we share an account next time without being seeing each others orders, etc?
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@mrs. bird: that's what I think the idea is! you're your own account but both share the benefits. my confusion is if you're allowed diff shipping or billing addresses, cause obviously that would show that it's not a within-household member, lol
ETA: if husband and I shared we'd have same billing and shipping address, so pretty obvious we're household members. but if I split with a friend, my mom, my cousin, etc. - would they realize we aren't household members with the different addresses. that's what i'm trying to figure out. LOL.

@mrs. bird: I can't see any of my husband's purchases on my Prime account. But I could revoke his privileges at any moment!

@mrsjazz: bahaha! do the dishes or you're paying for shipping!

@Mrs.Someone: Really? So do they need my account login info to get the prime benefits?
pomelo / 5000 posts
@abbydabbydoodlebug: No. My dad paid the fee and extended an invite to me. He doesn't see what I buy, and vice versa. I get the benefit of fast/free shipping, but nothing for the videos.

My husband and I share a prime membership (and live in the same house obviously) but have different accounts. I can't see what he orders and vice versa so it is good for presents and whatnot.

@sorrycharlie: I'm thinking that maybe you can't share if the person lives elsewhere. Maybe they review addresses? Or maybe not and you can get away with it.
"If you sign up for a free trial or paid Prime membership, you may invite up to four eligible household members (living at the same address) to enjoy the shipping benefits of your free trial or paid Prime membership at no extra cost (invitees)."
@abbydabbydoodlebug: If you go to the Manage Prime Membership screen here's an option to invite a household member. You add their name, birthday, relationship to you, birthday, and e-mail address. The person receives an invitation via e-mail.

Yeah, DH's best friend "shared" his prime with us and we are definitely not in the same household, have any same shipping or billing addresses in our accounts. I think they just ask for the email and birthday to enter in when you are invited to share. We each have our own amazon account.

@sorrycharlie: my sister in sc uses my prime. I'm married so we have different last names and billing addresses. Also I'm in il.
pomelo / 5228 posts
@sorrycharlie: @mrs. bird: @abbydabbydoodlebug: Yep! No account sharing. They "invite" you to share their prime benefits, but you each maintain your own amazon accounts.

My brother lives in California and he shared his Prime membership with me (I'm in PA). We don't share an account, passwords or any purchase info. He's the primary member, so I don't get streaming, just the free shipping.

I recall reading that if you are an Amazon mom member you can't share your prime benefits.

@sorrycharlie: @mrs. bird: yep, i shared with my mom and sister. separate accounts, separate addresses, but they get free shipping. my parents have every tv channel known to man, so they don't need streaming!
papaya / 10343 posts
Yea we share with a friend of mine! Different names, different addresses, no issues.

I share with my mom and we don't live in the same household. I just had to send her an invite and she had to enter my birthday (I guess as a security measure?) and now she gets prime shipping from her Amazon account. She doesn't know my username or password.

I don't, yet. I think I looked into it and didn't do it for some reason.
Thanks for all the great info. I'm going to get my siblings on my account. Thanks!
pomegranate / 3331 posts
Yup, my mom shares with me! Only negatives are I don't get amazon mom or streaming. But we have Netflix and on demand through cable so we're good. I do wish there was a way to get amazon mom benefits though.

DH's nice friend shared his Prime with us, and I am so grateful! I always wondered why I couldn't view the tv streaming though, haha.

@sunny: Yup, and if you are an Amazon Student member at $39/year, you can't invite share your account either.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@sorrycharlie: doesn't have to be family. There's on lead account holder, the person that pays the membership fee. That person gets the free prime videos. I believe others don't get to combine Amazon mom.
You just add their account information and email. They have their own log in and everything.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@sunny: nope, I have Amazon mom and prime and share with another person. The person that's not the main account can't link Amazon mom to prime benefits. Does that make sense?
