Since you said you and your family are vaccinated I vote come but stay away during kids events.

DH got shingles when dd1 was younger. He just kept his distance. What were we supposed to do? Banish him to a motel?

@nana87: if you and DH are ok with them being around the kids, then maybe let them decide if it's worth the trip?

DH and I both had chicken pox when we were younger! Poor guy got it right after he got HFM from DD1 since his immune system was weakened. Which btw if anyone in your family has a weakened immune system then I'd ask them to stay away for that reason!

If they were really looking forward to seeing LO, I would have them come to your house, but not to the events. I would leave the call up to them if they think it's worth coming out or not without going to the main events.

I would have said don't come. Lots of LOs friends have younger siblings that come to parties that wouldn't have the vaccine. And lots of my friends are pregnant therefore weakened immune system.

I would let them as long as the site of the outbreak is covered and there is no touching at all. No hugs, kisses or high 5's. It is only supposed to be contagious if you come in contact with the oozing blisters.

Nope! Even with the vaccine your LO can still catch the pox. Not worth it.

Definitely would tell them not to come. It's not fair to expose others to them, even if you'd personally be okay with it.

I see wanting to be cautious, but if the rash is covered it shouldn't be too big an issue. Someone needs to come into contact with the blistery rash to be at risk of them catching chicken pox. Sounds like you've already made the decision but something to keep in mind for next time!

I just had a severe case of shingles in my eye/nose/mouth in January. My face still randomly burns/twitches.
You could not pay me to go within 100 feet of someone with singles, I don't care how small the risk of infection is!

I've had shingles, and was told what Mrs. Deer said-- that it's only contagious if someone touches blisters.. My spots were throughout my torso and upper legs-- areas where you'd have to make an effort to touch, you know? And, I didn't have blisters. So, I was ok to carry on with normal activity with no contagion risk. So, depending on where the spots were, I would have been fine with the shingles addled family visiting.

Id just be cautious. Maybe ask her to keep it covered and wash her hands frequently just in case.
