I am shopping for LO's fall/ winter wardrobe and I am confused about what shoes I should be purchasing for him. He is currently 10.5 months old and just started really walking this past weekend. He is big so he is already close to needing a size 5 which means he is being bumped up to the less than flexible soles in a lot of shoe lines. I know it is important for him to be able to move his feet, especially when first learning to walk but am unsure of how long this remains important. I also am unsure of using the more flexible soled shoes in our climate which is extremely cold, wet and snowy this time of year. Any suggestions? Should he have an outdoor pair and an indoor pair or are the softer soled shoes ok for outside? What is warm enough? What brands do you recommend?

I think it depends how much you think he'll really be walking in snow and outside when it's really cold...I thought my LO (14 months and walking in December) would need snow boots for when it as cold outside. But honestly, when it would have been cold and snowy enough for boots or cold weather shoes, he wasn't really out long enough to make it worth it. So we did just fine in sneakers.

@hilsy85: i agree. charlie is a december baby and he didn't really play in snow the first year so we were fine with just regular sneakers. they fit him best (new balance wide) because he had wide feet. we tried pedipeds which were super soft and comfy, but not wide enough for his feet. stride rites are good for wide feet though. i didn't worry about flexible soles and they seemed to be fine.
i would buy inexpensive snow boots if you are planning to play in the snow though... target has some hopefully in smaller sizes.

Look into baby bogs. Also, I think (but could be wrong) that the 18-24 month size in shoes from see kai run and Livie and Luca, which are soft soled, equate to a size 6? I always forget!
We did baby bogs for my daughter within the first two months that she was walking and she could manage (in the rain). They are fleece lined, so I think with good smartwool socks his toes would be warm enough for shortish periods outside!

@Silva: how did they handle the rain? Thinking about getting some for my LO for the winter, and wondering if I need those AND rainboots, or if they can do double duty...

We are in the same boat because daycare goes outside every day, even when it's cold out. So, I've got her robeez for inside and I'm trying to find snowboots for outside. She won't be able to walk well, but I don't think she'd be able to walk well in snow, anyways, so I'm not worrying about the hard sole/new walker thing.

@hilsy85: great in the rain, I'm more worried about snow, actually! But she would stand in puddles and still come in with dry feet.

You could try Stonz too. They're like waterproof bags for feet. You can get liners for them for warmth. They are good for winter crawlers or early walkers. We never had the liners but we put them over fleece socks and/or her slippers with leather soles.
