Maybe this is a dumb question; I never thought about it until the vaccination threads these past couple of days. I know the Tdap vaccine is for tetanus, diptheria and pertussis, but do all tetanus shots contain all 3/are all tetanus shots Tdap? DH and I both had a tetanus shot a couple of years ago but I don't recall hearing about the other 2 things. Is it safe to assume we're in the clear or is it possible to get just a tetanus shot with no other protection?

No, they don't. Many tetanus boosters are just tetanus and diphtheria.

You can get a Td which is just Tetanus and diptheria. I would double check what you got.

Bummer. I wasn't sure how to look that up, thanks! Looks like I may end up getting another shot; I'll ask my OB when I'm there in a couple of weeks.

My husband had had a physical at the beginning of the pregnancy and got the TDAP and they told him, 'oh this is your tetanus booster.' I really didn't think he'd had it but I called to check and they confirmed that it was the TDAP. Just check with your doctor.

Your doctor should be able to tell you if it was just tetanus or included all three.

My doctor told me that about a year and a half ago, they started including the whooping cough vaccine with the tetanus booster. If you tell your doctor when you had the booster, they should be able to tell you if it included the whooping cough booster too.

Thanks, ladies! It wasn't my regular doctor that I got the shot from (just a random family practitioner that I went to for an ear problem) so I'll have to do a little research and figure this out.
