I'm going to sound like a total idiot here, but, I just downloaded a vaccination app to keep track of A's, since she's having her two months jabs tomorrow, and I see they're going to give her six. Is that literally sticking her with six needles?? She's going to go nuts! Or do they combine it into one shot?
Also, can you give me some idea of what to expect afterwards?

Some of them are combined and we have one that's an oral vaccine. For her two and four month shots she had two actual shots and the oral vaccine. For her six month shots, it was the same plus a flu shot.
After her two month shots, she had a slight fever and was exhausted. She had really no reaction to her four month shots besides being sleepy the first day. And after her six month shots, she was tired and cranky for a few days.

I thought the same thing at first. She had 3 shots and 1 oral for the 2 and 4 month check ups, and it contained 7 vaccines total.

Like everyone else said, most of them are combined. I don't think DS has ever been stuck more than 3 times in one visit.

@travelgirl1: depends on how old LO is. DD is 9 months and i Have to hold her down. But first few times DH held her in his arms while nurse gives shot

When we've gone, the nurse holds her leg still and I hold her hands but we don't really have to hold her down.

@travelgirl1: You will be fine and so will she! The nurses are fast. I've never had to hold DS. The nurses have always had him lie down on the table with me at his head.

@luckypenny: ah I see. She's two months old but she wears a Pavlik harness that straps her legs into a good position for her hips so it might be hard for them to get a good angle in our arms...

Ask if you can nurse or feed her during the shots. For my LO's two-month, I gave him a bottle while the doctor did the shots (2 shots, 1 oral which he loved because it was sugary). The first shot didn't phase him at all, the second he turned bright red and cried for about 10 seconds. Then all was well! He finished his bottle and was sleepy for the rest of the day, but no other effects.

For all our shots our LO has laid on the table. I hold her upper body/distract/ have the pacifier ready and the nurse holds her legs while sticking her with the shots.
The nurses are very quick and very experienced with what positioning works best for them to be quick.

hey mama~ just had ours (2month) today... A had three shots, 2 on one thigh, 1 on the other, and then an oral vaccine.
honestly? the shots are the easy part. he cried for a minute, then passed out for 50 minutes... i nursed him and put him back down for another nap... and when he woke up from that nap... he was def sore from the shots. crying like i've never heard him before :'(.... we bathed him and gave him 80ml of baby tylenol and nursed him before putting him down for the night... </3 so glad that's over with~

@travelgirl1: they did it so fast that she didn't even know it happened until after it was over. And then she stopped crying shortly after.
We did have to give her Tylenol (check w/ your doc on the dosage before you leave!) a couple hours later because she was sore, but that was it. I think it's a lot harder on the parents.

honestly, that moment where they realize "ow, that hurts" and just scream out of nowhere hurts my heart to even think about it. And I've seen it so many times with both kids!! But kids are resilient... with both of them we never had more than just a few seconds of crying and they were happy and smiling again. The oral vaccine was worse for both kids because they had never tasted anything but breastmilk!!
Congrats for making it thru the 2 month vaccines!!!

Some are combined and some are oral. The norovirus one is oral. My LO got a kick of it. The jabs aren't too bad. Best thing you can do is talk to your LO. Don't baby talk, just talk and distract. It was what our nurse did during the two month shots. We did baby Tylenol after the shots for soreness.

Thanks , everyone. She's also having an ultrasound and appointment with her orthopedic Dr this morning so all in all not a good day for her.... But on the plus side, we might not be so distressed by it as we're getting used to going to medical procedures with her. Thanks for all your advice

2 shots one oral, and the nurses do the shots at the same time.
Expect a sleepy baby and perhaps a low grade fever.

My pediatrician doesn't have any of the combined shots because so many people ask to space them out. So she got four sticks at her 2 and 4 month visit and 5 at her 6 month visit. It sucks but they are pretty quick about it at least.

@travelgirl1: if you're already used to medical stuff it might not be as bad! i felt like it was brutal because (honestly!) she'd never really cried before that, only grunted for food. so I was a wreck when she was inconsolable!
for the record, we got 1 oral (rotavirus) and 3 sticks.

@sorrycharlie: aw thanks for asking! She was a little star, considering how upset she gets at her ultrasounds you'd think she'd start to make some connection between hospitals and lying on the table but she was so sweet, all the doctors and nurses there love her and she beamed at them all and gurgled during the examination. For the shots she had some oral concoction then I held her in a sitting up position and the doctor and nurse took a needle and synchronised the injection with a leg each. she cried for 10 seconds then was grinning again, lol. She cried more at the Advil I gave her at home for her fever! All in all a rough day with the hip appointments being a few hours before the shots but we survived thanks again for asking!
