I haven't gotten a flu shot in the last 5 years. Last time I got one I got the flu (maybe that was just a coincidence?). My employer is offering free flu shots next week, and I am wondering if I should get one. Are there any downsides to getting one?

I got one yesterday and my arm hurts a little bit. I don't recall the nurse telling me of any other bad side effects though.

I can get free ones at work too. Even though this option has been available for years, this is the first time I'm getting one. I even let LO get one last week. We got sick a lot last winter so I'm hoping this won't happen again. I'm ready to try anything but I'm curious to see what others will say.

I started getting one since my office started offering them for free in the office! I don't go out of my way to get one though (although I would this year, since I'm TTC, and I definitely would while pregnant or with a very young LO). I never cared much until the one year I actually got the flu, as opposed to the bad colds that I called the flu before that. It was brutal so I understood why people get them. But, in general, I can go either way with it.

I think they're one of those things that can really go either way...I got one this year for the first time, being pregnant, but if I wasn't, I wouldn't have gotten one. I don't think the flu shot is on the same "necessity" level as other vaccines, like MMR and TDAP, unless you're a high risk category (eldery, young, pregnant, etc).

There are obviously risk to getting any vaccine. But for me, the benefits of getting a flu shot outweigh the risks. So it's really up to you. If you have had a flu shot in the past and not reacted to it then I would go ahead and get one if I were you since it's unlikely that you will have a negative reation. I got mine a few weeks ago and my arm was a little sore for the rest of that day but that was the only side effect I had.

It's supposed to be a dead virus, so they say it's a myth that you can get the flu from it. Some people can have an allergic reaction if they are allergic to eggs. I never got it before I was pregnant, but I probably will going forward so I don't expose my family. I've never gotten the flu and rarely get sick so that was why I never got it before. I got the merc. free shot at Walgreens and I'm pretty much a huge baby and it did not hurt at all and I had no reaction.

I dont get the flu shot. Never have, and my employer offers them for free yearly. I dont think Liv will ever get one either. I just dont like getting frequent vaccines that change yearly

I keep debating about this, too, now that I'm pregnant. My company also offers free flu shots. I haven't had the flu since i was probably 5 years old. Maybe 4. So I have never bothered to get it

I'm not getting one. I see no need for it for me personally. I rarely ever get sick anyways.

i get one every year, and i got one this year too. (I'm pregnant now.) I think the benefits far outweigh the risks. My mom got swine flu the first year it was around (no vaccine for it then) and was super-sick for months. I never want to be that sick, particularly when I'm pregnant.

I've gotten one every year since I was 15 or so. I feel like it takes so little time/effort/money on my part, so the benefits far outweigh the risks.

@Leialou: Same here! I'm rarely sick and haven't had the flu, thankfully. I don't see the need for the shot when I'm healthy and my immune system is strong. I'd be fine even if I did get sick.

It is mandated by my employer (I work in a hospital, so am considered "vulnerable" population). I would get it even if it wasn't mandated. I had the flu once and felt like death. You cannot get the actual flu from the flu shot (it is a dead virus), but you can experience flu-like symptoms - the aches, fever, etc. It usually only lasts about 24 hours or so, though, versus getting the actual flu that lasts for days or weeks and sometimes lands you in the hospital.

i never used to get the flu shot - but since i've been pregnant I have gotten 2! since i was pregnant in february, and they just had me get another one now.

I get flu shots every year. Got really sick once in high school and since then I've been diligent about getting it.

I never did until I got pregnant. I got another one when DD was a baby but skipped it last year. I will do the same thing for baby #2 but then I will probably stop getting them.

I never got a flu shot until I started working for a health system. It was offered free to everyone (even though I don't work in direct patient care) and so I got it just to be safe. I've done this for 4 years, having just gotten one this week, and I haven't had the flu since. Other than a sore arm, I don't see any reason to avoid puking lol.

Always and since I work in a health care setting I need to. LO has already started with her first round of the shot.
But I still won't get a flu shot lol. But what a freaking bizarre video!
