One of my friends is having a shower next month, and hasn't registered for too many things. I am thinking of making a basket of my favourite things. Is this an okay idea? Should i just find something off the registry and get that instead? Any suggestions for gifts?

Snot sucker, AA blankets, saline, sleep sack?

@autumnlove: Ooh, thanks. I can't believe i forgot the snot sucker! I wish AA blankets weren't so expensive in Canada. I bought some for another friend as part of her gift, and i paid $65!

I would totally just gift her with a bunch of things that you would want in a gift basket!

I would get her a gift card and a cute outfit. They might not have a full registry for a reason and might not want the stuff you give them (even if you loved the items!). If you do the basket, make sure to include a gift receipt!

@caffeinated: I think a gift basket is a great idea! Do you know if she's planning on breast feeding? If so, maybe nursing pads, lanolin, Medela gel pads?

I would go gift card! Several people have bought me useful things that I already have--they're not on the registry because I got them myself for a good price.

I think the basket is a good idea. That's what my sister did for my shower!! It was things I wouldn't register for, like raspberry leave tea, nursing pads, nipple cream, those kinds of things. I loved it!!

I would go with gift card. Or a cute outfit and diapers/wipes. My coworker didn't register since it was baby #4. Diapers are always appreciated (unless theyre CDing) and this was their first girl so I knew they were low on girl clothes.

I'd say when in doubt get diapers. :). You can always make her a pretty diaper cake to make it more fun.

I agree with PP and would do a GC from the store they registered from if there really was nothing on their registry I wanted to buy. I'd probably add a little something (a sleeper or blanket) with the GC. The older I get the more I understand and realize that people would really register for the things they want/need. And I hate receiving things that I end up finding useless or won't use.

You could also get her something useful for herself. GC for mani, pedi or magazine subcription especially if you know she's going to have alot of down time with the baby or a really nice new robe or housecoat she can wear during chilly late night feedings.
