LO (8 months / 35 wk) has been making a funny drawn out noise that often goes into "la la la" or mama, etc. We encourage it because it's been helping her "talk" and it's adorable. But since Friday, when she's unhappy or wants attention she started turning that noise into a very loud, unnerving, SHRIEK. Like when DH and I were moving a rug earlier we put her in her high chair with a toy. The toy fell and she started doing this shriek noise. It's not an "in pain" cry but it's highhhhhhhhhly annoying. She did it in the car when we got stuck in traffic yesterday and I almost had a panic attack. I need to nip this in the bud (or figure out if it is truly from her being bored or wanting our attention or a change of scenery,etc) HELP! I have a headache just thinking about it!!!!!!!!!

Ugh, yes this sounds like an attention thing. My 2 year old does it sometimes. We try to ignore it!

My LO is a few weeks younger but she's been doing the velociraptor screech for a bit. Sometimes we ignore it and she stops but most of the time she will just keep going. It started right before she started crawling when she was trying hard. It's her I'm FRUSTRATED screeeeeeeeech. I donno what to do either except watch her sometimes and see if she can figure it but a lot of times I just go get her and think 'please just be a stage'

@Maysprout: E's is defintely related to wanting attention. For example she was just doign it while DH was making his breakfast (because he wasn't paying attention to her.) I hope your LO quits when she figures out crawling!!!
It sucks because, she's a baby. We HAVE to pay attention to her. We can't just ignore her to get her to stop!!!!!!!!

@Lindsay05: I'm struggling with ignoring it because... she's a baby!! Eventually we have to pick her up/pay attention to her. It's so frustrating.

@kjpugs: we ignore J when he does it. He will stop but he's been doing it more and more lately. He does it because he wants attention and thats not how you get my attention. He also stops after 30 seconds or so its not continuous.

@jetsa: she will not stop - will not - until we get her. Eventually- we HAVE to get her, she's not self sufficient like if this was a toddler who we could let them to themselves until they stop. Like she did it in the high chair and I can't just leave her in the high chair all night. So I'm worried that when we eventually get her, we are showing her (even ifit's NOT the case) that her shrieking will get our attention.

The kid I nanny did this. I think it was partially attention related and partially because he didn't have the verbal skills to tell me what he needed. So I tried teaching him signs so that he could communicate his needs with me. Once he knew the signs, I would ignore the shrieking until he would do the sign. For example, if he was done eating I would ask him if he was all done and do the sign for it. I would repeat the question after each shriek until he would do the sign. It helped a lot, but it did take a while for him to catch on to the signs. I think he was a bit older than E when I started it (maybe that's why it took him so long to catch on?), but maybe you could try out some signing for a bit with her?
