Its great that research is leading to more answers. But I hope this doesn't lead to people being less vigilant about creating a safe sleeping environment for their child.

I did read that and I think it's really interesting. I guess I'm just wondering how they move forward from this? Is this another thing they'll test for in genetic testing? Will they try to isolate the gene and "treat" it? I love genetics....

I saw this! I think it's great that they're finding more answers about the cause of SIDS (and I wonder if eventually we'll be able to test babies to know who is at greater risk right from the get-go), but I do agree with @MamaMoose. Hopefully this doesn't lead to people being less vigilant because they think that it doesn't matter what they do!

Very interesting! I'm so glad they're finding answers.

Well it sounds like they are saying that everything they are urging people to do (back to sleep, nothing in the crib, keeping baby at a comfortable temperature, etc) is best to prevent SIDS from happening, especially for babies who might be more at risk due to certain abnormalities with their brain stems... so it might be even more of a reason for everyone to be more vigilant? Anyway, that's what I took away from it!

I love that they're finding more answers and agree with @MamaMoose. I do think that good sleep habits to help prevent are still super important.

SIDS fears still keep me up at night, so I wish there was a test that all babies could have that would somehow test their brain stem.
But how would that be possible? I mean...is it even possible with alive babies?

@Anagram: I agree. It doesn't relieve any fears for me. Unless they find a way to test all babies.

I read this several years ago, so it's not new research. Interesting though.

I've heard of this before but I'm hoping they are closer to finding a way to test the neurotransmitter levels or something. I'm so paranoid about SIDS.

@MapleMoose: I agree! I can't even fall asleep with her on my chest for fear that I will either drop her or accidentally suffocate her. Hopefully, if this is true, they can find a way to test for it. Not saying I would be any less vigilant about keeping things that could suffocate her out of her crib but it would give me atleast some peace of mind knowing I have more control.

Thanks for posting! This is very interesting and I hope these new findings will bring more awareness and solutions!
