I'm interested in using sign language with our baby when he comes. Do any of y'all have recommendations of books or videos that you used that were awesome?

I don't have any recommendations, but I certainly plan on doing it with our LO's. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

We haven't actually done any signing yet ourselves but I've heard Words by the Handful has some excellent books. The blog is: http://www.wordsbythehandful.com/blog/?page_id=4

we attended mommy & me classes on signing... so much fun! try and see if there are such classes in your neighborhood. in new york, the class we went to is called Baby Fingers. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, I started signing at around 6 months and DD #1 started signing back at 10 months. Her favorite first signs were "milk" and "more". Through YouTube videos she also learned to sign the alphabet at around 16 months!

we have the first three dvds of signing time:

We never did them with Charlie, but I'm going to do them with Olive. Charlie learned the sign for more after just one signing class when he was 9 months old. it was invaluable just having that one sign!

I definitely recommend signing with your baby. It's so cool when you know that s/he understands what you say and even more awesome when s/he signs back to you. This is the book I read. It's a good book but to be honest, it's not really necessary. You can just start using signs with your LO while saying the word at the same time. Just be consistent.

@Mrs. Bee: you'll have to keep us updated on how it goes...maybe a blog post once you start using the DVDs...
This sounds like such a great idea!

We are planning on doing this. Our daycare even will use it during the day.

We taught our baby Daddy which she did a lot until she could say it. She smiled whenever we would sign Bath or our made-up sign for Going Out. You can make up your own signs or watch the baby for their signs. As long as you both understand it. Though it will be hard to transfer to a daycare sign. Then we taught her more but she couldn't get it so she would say Muh and cry instead. She's clapping now so maybe she'll catch on now.

We haven't tried this too much yet but I want to start. How old were your LO when they were able to understand?

I've heard of this, and hope to do some with our baby. I look forward to any advice shared here.
