Is this possible? Or are we going to have to go cold turkey on the paci too?
Also, is it possible to wean from the paci at night but still use it for naps (which we won't be training for, he naps well)? Or is this going to be too confusing?

We used a paci when sleep training. It was particularly helpful that we didn't sleep train until 6.5 months because by then DS was able to help manipulate the paci to his mouth himself with only a little help from us rather than us being the ones to always put it back in his mouth for him. Personally I wouldn't take take the paci away for night unless you are also doing it for naps but you know your baby best.
ETA: we used the glow in the dark MAM pacis at night so DS could see his paci rather than blindly groping around and getting frustrated.

@pelikila: how did you do it? Did you replace it for him at night? or just leave a few in the crib and hope that he would find them/

We didn't have a paci (LO would never take it!), but with LO we've noticed it's okay to have two different routines or "set-ups" for night and naps. For instance, we never used a swaddle or sleep sack for naps, but her eyelids droop when she sees it at night. I think it depends on your baby. Also, I have several friends that put like 15 pacis in the crib so their LO could always find one. They all said it dramatically cut down on them having to go into their LO's room at night.

@Weagle: that is very reassuring! We also do a different routine for naps and night time, so maybe it would be ok to have the paci as just one more difference?

@hilsy85: It doesn't hurt to try! The worst that can happen is that it doesn't work and you pop the paci back in and try another day

@Weagle: ha true :)And the thought of doing away with the paci completely and needing to nap train as well as sleep train gives me cold sweats!

@hilsy85: We did a modified CIO sleep training. DH would rock DS until drowsy and put him in his crib. Then he would sit in the rocker and watch so DS was never alone with crying. If DS got too worked up or managed to push all of his pacis out of the crib, DH would help DS either find a paci (gently nudge it towards his hand or face) or would pat and shush him but wouldn't pick him up unless he was overwrought. As it went on, DS started to reach for the paci to self soothe and DH would only occasionally need to intervene. It isn't the right method for everyone but it was what worked for us (and my mental state since I couldn't let my baby cry without knowing he was okay and we don't have a video monitor).

We didn't officially sleep train, but the couple of nights of night-weaning we used a paci to get him back down after his MOTN wakeup.
He sometimes takes one for naps or while in the car seat now, but rarely ever takes it at night. I think it's totally okay to separate!

We just did this last week and went cold turkey on the paci for all naps and bedtime. My thinking was that they don't have object permanence yet, so when it's gone, it's gone forever...at least in their little heads!
It took one rough nap for DS and one rough wake up for DD (6-8 minutes of CIO each), but we've never looked back. As soon as we took away the paci, they started STTN and taking 1-1.5 hour naps!
