Did/will you have a smash cake for your LO's first birthday? If you had one, did people who don't spend time reading baby blogs or looking a baby birthday parties on piterest think it was strange? Did your baby enjoy it? Am I just getting sucked in to thinking LO should have one because of the cute pictures I've seen, and a cupcake or slice of cake would be just as good?

We weren't going to, but at the last minute dh decided that she should have one so she did.
Its so common now, in the real world, not just blogs, that nobody thought it was weird at all. The adults my parents age talked about how different it is now from back in the day, but they've all seen it at their own grandchildrens parties.
Of course my lo is too little to know the difference between a cupcake and a cake, and she didn't smash into it like you want her to. But it was still cute!

We didn't, because we bought our cake from the bakery. Had I made it, I probably would have made a smash cupcake.

We did pictures of a smash cake and then gave her a cupcake at her birthday party. I was glad we did the pictures because at the party she was too distracted to eat much

Absolutely! all of my nieces and nephews did and they were hysterical and adorable eating their cake :o)

@looch: Our bakery gives us a free smash cake if we have the write "Happy 1st Birthday" on the cake. It was a pretty big smash cake too! I think you have to write that so people aren't scamming them for free cakes for other occasions.

OMG! YES! I thought it was so dumb until a friend invited me to her daughter's 1st birthday.. I brought a cake and she asked if LO could smash it. I said yes, and then we all watched and took photos. It was so funny, I definitely want to do it! But.... maybe a healthier "cake."

Personally I don't like smash cakes. I'd rather kids were playing in mud than covered in food. But that's just me. All my friends had smash cakes and everyone else though it was hilarious. So if you want to - go for it!

we had one. Liv poked her finger into it and ate the frosting, then realized her hands were sticky. She wiped her finger off, and dove headfirst into the cake without hands so she could keep them clean lol. It was awesome

I ordered a smash cake for my Lo but she didn't like it. She poked at it, grabbed a handful and threw it on the floor
It was worth ordering for the pics we got though -
I'm definitely going to be the mean mom and not get LO a smash cake. I don't know - just seems needlessly wasteful to me.

I voted banana lol. I wouldnt go out of my way to have a cake smash photo but most likely with a 1st birthday the child would get messy with the cake

I agree with @grace. I personally don't really "get" smash cakes. Every other day of the year 1) don't play with your food and 2) don't go crazy with desserts.
My husband thinks it's funny and I am being ridiculous about it. But, it's not for me. To each their own!

My mom made my son's cake and made a special topper made out of cake just for him so he could do whatever he wanted with it. He poked it a bit and then cried to get away. He just isn't in to cake.

I've yet to attend a first birthday in which the kid had any interest in the smash cake. Its always ended up rather anti-climatic and then a whole cake gets tossed. I don't really care about them either way.

we just gave both DDs cupcakes from the same bakery we ordered their cakes from. It was cute even though they weren't interested in it too much on the days of their parties. Fine with me... For DD 2, I had her eat a cupcake for her 1 year pro pics.

Maybe when they're a toddler. My nephew wasn't *supposed* to have a smash cake, but he immediately destroyed his 2yo birthday cake. With a trowel. That was pretty hilarious!

I plan to make a sugar free cake for LO as well, using a more natural sweetener. Maybe honey since he'll be one...

Every baby I know has had their first real piece of bakery birthday cake on their first birthday. It inevitably turns into a cake smash giant mess. I'm not a fan of that kind of super sweet bakery icing and excess sugar at that age, but I know there are recipes for a less sweet banana or pumpkin based cake, and I think I might prefer to do that. My nephew was crazy cute at his. He shoveled so much cake into his mouth, it was adorable. And he loooves sugar now. I'm just not sure if i really want to expose my kid to more than just a bite maybe. haven't decided yet, but leaning towards a strong no on the cake. I don't even like most bakery cakes and find them too sweet, I can only imagine what underdeveloped taste buds taste when they have it.

Definitely, but probably something small like a cupcake. All of the fun is them getting cake and frosting all over themselves!
It is pretty normal to me, my parents did a cupcake smash with me 29 years ago!

I have pictures of me at my 1st birthday with my face covered in my OWN smash cake over 25 years ago, and LO is absolutely having one at her party in two weeks. Adorable pictures, and a priceless look on her face is worth the sacrifice of her having a little sugar (okay, okay, a LOT of sugar, but still, it's her first birthday!)

I thought this was a common thing for everyone! I did with DS (also got the free one when we purchased his cake), and will do it with DD!

We had a smash cake! I never thought of a smash cake as being a blog thing. I had one at my first birthday! We didn't even have a party. We originally planned on it just being me, DH, & DS (ended up celebrating with a couple of friends and their two girls) and still bought one. It was only $5 for an eighth of a sheet cake and it was perfect. DS loved it and got mad when I tried to take the cake from him! I would suggest getting whipped frosting. That's what I originally ordered but there was a miscommunication in the bakery and we ended up with buttercream. It was good but the whipped frosting is so much lighter and easier to clean up.

I wish I knew where the term "smash cake" came from--it totally bugs me for some reason!
I'm 26 and my mom made me my own little cake for my first birthday, so as PPs have said, it's not a new thing. I'm sure I'll do the same for my future kids.

@pastemoo: I emailed my sister last night to ask for the recipe she made at her sons birthday last week. It was SO GOOD. Her son LOVED it and it doesn't use any flour or sugar.
