This has been an issue at my office to the point that the owner of the building put up a sign that says "No smoking in front of the building" But people still smoke right in front of the door, so the only way to enter or exit the building is to go through a cloud of cigarette smoking which is gross to me and not good for my health. I've started holding my breath and mumbling when these smokers try to talk to me and chat as I'm trying to enter or exit. its really starting to annoy me now. Does it bother you?

yes it bothers me. up until a couple of years ago, all of my friends were smokers, but none would ever stand by an entrance or exit where families would need to walk through their smoke. that's just rude. at a bar at night or something it doesn't phase me, but during the day it does. i also hate being at parks or other outdoor things where people feel like because they're outside, it's acceptable to smoke anywhere they want. don't come sit next to me and start smoking while i'm sitting on a blanket with children having a picnic, find somewhere to sit where it won't be bothering anyone.

Smoking near people in general drives me nuts. The other day at the beach someone came near where I was sitting at a picnic table with my LO, said hi to my LO so it's not like they didn't know there was a baby there, and then lit up a cigarette. So I had to pick up my LO, diaper bag, and beach bag and lug everything far away from there. Just so they could have their smoke.

It bothers me when my son is around. People in Europe are a bit more nonchalant, they smoke everywhere. It's annoying, especially on the train platforms.

Smokers at my work always walk far away from the building and try to hid it. But I hate this at restaurants and shopping stores, go to the side, no need to stand right in front of the door when it's a heavy movement area.

I'm pretty sure the law is you have to be 20 feet from a door to smoke in my area....

It drives me crazy when people do that; it's discusting. Check your local statutes, many states have laws against smoking right outside office buildings. You could also bring the issue to your comapny's HR or legal team.

Any kind of smoking bothers me. I usually hold my breathe and walk really fast. I know some states or cities that have laws against smoking within a certain feet of buildings. I've seen outdoor smoking sections for smokers at some companies.

YUP! SO ANNOYING.
I'm an ex-smoker too and it bugs the crap out of me. I also hate when I'm walking through our outdoor mall when people are walking and smoking at the same time.... UGH. no consideration for others.

My husband has Cystic Fibrosis which is a lung disease. So, smoking in general bugs me because it could kill him (yes I know that is over dramatic). I know they have rights, but their rights stop at my nose.

My husband works at a hospital and a lot of the employees stand in the corridor to the visitors parking garage so you basically walk through a tunnel of smoke to get to the hospital. It's super gross.

We live in a block of 6 flats and the people that live in the one below us smoke outside of the main door to our building. Because they're outside, we can't do anything about it. Worst of all, my son's nursery window is right above the entrance (on the 3rd floor), so when they stand outside and smoke it goes right into his room. We have to keep the window closed, which is a pain given that we don't have A/C.
The other night, my hubs smelled smoke wafting into our living room and poured a glass of water out the open window before slamming it shut! -
yes there is a law against it , this is why the owners of the building put up the sign,but people disregard it. Very inconsiderate I think..

Yes, until my state went smoke-free this was a HUGE issue now smokers must be at least 30 (I think) feet from the door. It really bothered me that I sometimes work in a hospital and you had to walk through this cloud of smoke to get inside; most of the smokers were patients who left their oxygen tanks in a "holding" area inside.

YES, it drives me insane. Smoking is a personal choice, but at least respect others who don't want to breathe/walk through your smoke! I was leaving my OB's office last week and someone was smoking right outside the doorway! I was so aggravated and almost said something but they didn't speak English anyway. I used to live by a hospital and was always amazed at how many nurses would be standing down by the parking garage smoking (had to be away from doors). The hospital I am delivering at is a tobacco-free campus.

Drives me nuts too. It's a law where I'm from that you cannot smoke within 15 feet of a door to a building.

@Megwag- our neighbors sometimes smoke outside of our building, and we're on the second floor so it goes right into our apartment. It's really annoying, because then we have to close all the windows (just like your nursery) or the entire apartment smells like cigarettes.

@highwire: That's the law in PA, too, but NO ONE enforces it. I work at a hospital and people stand right outside the doors smoking. I actually said something once to a crowd of 3-4 people sitting right outside the one building who were just sitting there smoking. The building is where the OB/GYN offices are, so pregnant women are going in and out of there constantly. I don't usually say something, but this was really bad - it was like all 3-4 of them had been sitting there chain-smoking for 20 minutes. I asked them to please move, since this is the OB building. They actually did it without much resistance.

Yes, it's so rude (and I guess illegal, too)! People who smoke while waiting in lines and in other situations that you can't get away from SUCK!
