I voted once in england because I was a permanent resident there while I was studying. THeir law allows lawful long term residents to vote in elections for their prime minister. Over here you can only vote if you are a US citizen. Do you agree with this. This means if you are a green card holder you have no say in the elections even though you live here permanently

I'm only a temp resident in Canada so I don't have a say and rightly so. If I was permanent res, then I think I should only have a say if I was planning to stay there for good, which I'm not.... But my baby will be a Canadian citizen and get to vote there when she's old enough.

I think permanent residents and even long term work permit holders should be able to vote in local/state elections. But maybe not the Presidential elections.
I'm biased though because I have lived here for 8 years (and paying taxes for 8 years!) and I'm still not eligible but I wish I was! I probably won't be eligible until the 2020 presidential election!!!

Btw the FEC says that permanent residents can contribute to PACs because they are not considered foreign nationals. Yet they can't vote... It's a little confusing.

Holders. You are a citizen/passport holder of whatever country you came from.It's the first step to immigrate to America. You need one of these to work/live here legally long term. After 5 years (3 if you marry a citizen) you can apply for citizenship. Then you become a naturalized US citizen and can get a passport!

I'm a permanent resident, solely because I've been lazy and don't want to pay the $1000+ fees to apply for citizenship.
I'd like to vote, but I see why they don't allow it.
(I've been here since I was six years old and don't ever plan on leaving.)

I am a resident of the UK and we are not voting. We are not citizens and we have no business in their government since we're only here for a few years.

I vote yes, but definitely with a bias since my husband is English. He's been here for 5 years now and won't be leaving. And he has paid quite a bit of money into our taxes, so I don't see why not.

I was a permanent resident from the time I moved to the U.S. at 3 years old until I was 21. I think there are many permanent residents who contribute to their communities in many positive ways and should have a voice and say in how their communities are governed. Most of the permanent residents I know have plans to stay in the U.S. permanently and consider it their home along with their home countries.

Permanent residents:
*cannot vote
*cannot work for the federal government (for the most part)
*cannot serve on a Jury
*cannot run for any political office
*cannot leave the country for an extended period of time without permission
*can be deported/denied citizenship if arrested or engaged in any criminal activity -
No jury duty? That is a great perk of being a permanent resident!
