My husband is pretty set on getting a soda stream. If you have one do you like it? How often do you use it? Which model do you recommend?

I like it. I have the most basic one and have had it for two years. Sometimes I only use it once a week and sometimes I use it everyday.
My friend has a model that shows three droplet lights for customized carbonation level. I’d recommend that one.

We got given one. I never thought we'd use it but we actually have. We used it almost daily when it was warm. We just have a basic one.

We have the base model and we use it pretty much every day. We both gave up soda when I was pregnant with my daughter and I get so sick of just water. We were drinking alot of LA Croix which was getting pricey. I drink it just carbonated sometimes and usually have cut up citrus in the fridge to squeeze into it

We had the one with the 3 droplets showing the carbonation level like @Mrs. Goose: mentioned, which I think is still a fairly basic model. We drink a lot of seltzer so we used it all the time- almost always just plain. It is a little cheaper than buying seltzer at the store- although not a lot cheaper, once you factor in the carbonation canisters. But it’s so convenient to not have to go out and buy seltzer all the time and carry it home. Plus I *think* it’s more environmentally friendly but I’m not actually sure.
We had ours for a few years and something has come loose and it doesn’t work anymore. We will probably buy another because we liked it so much.
ETA: you can use 20% off coupons in the canister refills at BBB, FYI.

We had the penguin model for a few years and used it nearly every day. We had to sell it before we moved because I don’t think they are on the market where we live now. Definitely get a model with glass bottles instead of plastic. I don’t think you need indicator lights or anything like that.

@SweetiePie: we really didn’t care for it. It just didn’t taste the same as the canned or bottled stuff. I don’t remember what model we had, probably the basic or one up from the basic model.

@lamariniere: I didn’t know there was a glass one??!! Mine was a Christmas gift so I didn’t get to pick it.
@mrsbubbletea: it’s true, it doesn’t taste quite the same. I still buy cans of some flavours and then do plain bottles so we’re buying less cans. Ideally, I’d just like to buy natural flavourings, but they just don’t exist or I haven’t found them. I want no sweeteners or any kind. It’s annoying.

@Mrs. Goose: I think only one specific model came with glass. You can buy replacement bottles but for the basic model they were all plastic. I think it was a safety hazard with the pressurization and everything.

@Foodnerd81: also if you bring in your used to BBB your get half off the next one.
DH has the basic model and uses it when he’s home. I don’t like Seltzer water. When he first bought it I bought some flavoring, which was okay, but isn’t something I would normally drink. Not sure if an Izze is a fair comparison, but those I like and felt it tasted lighter. LO loves making and drinking “fizzy” water.

I don’t have one myself, but have tried ones friends have. I was never impressed. It didn’t have to do with the flavoring, but the overall fizziness. Perhaps there are others out there that are better!
I like seltzer when it’s like painfully fizzy. If it’s even slightly flat, it’s gross to me. I’m sure most aren’t as high maintenance So just make sure the amount of carbonation lives up to how you like it!

@Foodnerd81: that makes sense. I was excited when I read it, but based on further thought it wouldn’t be great for me because I am the queen of clumsiness.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: my toddler is newly into it and calls it “spicy water” and it’s like a special treat.

Thanks all! I personally am annoyed because we have so little counter space (hello nyc apartment) but DH is convinced we need it. And he’s not a buyer, he is a minimalist. So I’m just doing it.
I went with the Source line? It’s like $100 and says it has the levels of carbonation.
Any favorite flavorings I should buy?

@SweetiePie: as for flavoring I just grab these at the grocery store - lots of flavors to choose from and no added calories

@Mamaof2: PERFECT yay this is so much easier than getting soda stream brand stuff.

@SweetiePie: I’d rather store one soda stream than many bottles of seltzer! Plus lugging them home from the store...

@Foodnerd81: yeah but seltzer goes in the fridge where I actually have room
I just got rid of the bottle warmer because we never use it. So HOPEFULLY it will fit in that little nook.

@SweetiePie: I used to pack the basket of the stroller full of seltzer bottles and walk them home a mile then up two flights of stairs... soda stream ftw

We won one from BBB 7 years ago in a completing our registry party. We still use it all the time and love it. I also love that I can use the $5 off of $15 coupons from BBB to get the refills for $10. This thing was clutch during both pregnancies. I usually add a splash of grapefruit juice or drink it plain.

We have the basic model and I can't drink carbonated water unflavored and my new thing is Spindrift, so what I think I am going to do is puree some fruit and freeze it in ice cube trays so I can mix it in with my seltzer water.

It’s funny, I personally don’t even like seltzer! I like soda (coke and root beer) but seltzer I think is so unappealing. My husband doesn’t even drink seltzer regularly. This is completely a new thing for us. I won’t even be using it.

DH had the most basic one for over a decade and we just upgraded to the kitchenaid one (which is so easy to use, it has a gauge to show you how fizzy it’s getting, plus it looks like the mixer). I used to be a huge Diet Coke fiend and switched to plain sodastream seltzer when I was pregnant over 4 years ago and never stopped. We keep 6 bottles in the fridge at all times and I drink it plain or with a splash of trader Joes pineapple juice and lime.

@SweetiePie: A few years ago DH *insisted* we had to have a soda stream. I didn't think it was necessary and I tried to talk him out of it and failed. Sometimes it's easier just letting him buy what he wants instead continuing to arguing. Well, we had it for a couple of days and he realized it was a bad idea, lol. He didn't like the way it tasted. He's super picky about his coke and it tastes off. It also went through the carbonation stuff really quickly. Overall, we found it way more of a hassle to make soda than to just buy the stuff.

@ShootingStar: yes exactly on just giving in sometimes. Haha. So I’m kinda thinking this might happen. I have a feeling he won’t use it as much as he thinks he will. But we’ll see. I had 20% off coupon so it was only $80 and to give it a shot that’s not terrible. If we don’t like it we’ll give it to my in-laws or something.

@SweetiePie: One really important thing to consider is if you (or whoever will be drinking the seltzer) like the taste of your tap water. When we first had our Soda Stream (in a Brooklyn apartment), it didn't get much use because we felt our tap water tasted weird carbonated, and it was silly to be lugging home giant jugs of water just to carbonate it ourselves. We like the taste of tap water where we are now, so with that, it's more economical and easier to use the soda stream. I don't generally buy the flavors to make soda, but I will throw a splash of lemonade or cranberry juice in my water to give a little flavor to the seltzer. We have the Source and it does everything I need it to do. If you don't drink large quantities at once, I recommend getting some half liter bottles (smaller than the standard size) to avoid wasting your carbonation tanks on carbonating bigger bottles that won't get finished.
