Do you need to use a Mac to get anywhere in the software development world? Does it really revolve around that stupid apple that much?

hahaha - I've never used a Mac! I think Windows is still the primary operating system for most businesses!

@mrbee: my husband has been doing some online classes and almost everyone he has run into has been on a Mac. He also ran into a job that stated that the employee must have a Mac.

Yea it definitely depends what you are writing! In my experience it's been mostly web developers working on Mac, and software developers on PC (or using a Mac with Windows running on it).

I've been a Microsoft developer for over 10 years now. I think that it's honestly easier to get work in the windows development world than the Mac one, unless you're into writing apps, or looking to build solely for web. I personally think Microsoft development gives you a lot more options.
Even my coworker who is a Mac enthusiast works mostly with PC for development.

It 100% depends on what you are doing. There is little that *requires* a Mac though. iOS development would be an example.
IIRC at Google, they give you the option to use a Mac or PC.

My DH is a software developer who's used Windows, Linux, and a Mac . He writes in Ruby on Rails on a Mac currently. He says it mostly depends on what language you're trying to write in. Ruby is much easier to do on a Mac whereas .NET is easier on Windows. Not that you can't do it on different machines. It's just easier.

I would say definitely not! DH has a software company and none of the employees use Macs...he hates them!
