All of our accounts are joint. It seems simpler that way to me. I don't work so I wouldn't have any money tonout into my own account.

My husband has no idea how much money we have at any given time. He knows his debit card works and that's all that really matters for him. LOL. This is less terrible than it sounds.

DH was bad with money. Lots of debt when we met, living paycheck to paycheck (even though he made plenty), not saving for retirement, etc. After a couple months of dating he admitted this to me and asked me for help managing finances. After we moved in together he asked me to take things over. We both have individual savings accounts. I think it's important to have something separate just in case. I'm not talking about divorce per-say, one of us could get sued or something or get audited. It would be nice to have access to funds if one of our accounts got frozen.

Nope... everything is joint. But I manage everything. He never ever looks at it. While this may seem weird it makes sense for us because I work at the bank where all of our accounts are held. We are lucky enough to be able to pretty much spend money without having to think too much about it. If he does happen to buy a big ticket item we usually discuss and agree ahead of time, or at the very least he lets me know the amount so I can plan accordingly as far as where to move things between checking and savings. I've never really thought about a just in case account. But I guess since I work at the bank I could run away with all of it some day if I wanted to... muahahaha! ; )

Everything is joint for us, but we do have multiple accounts with several banks at our financial planner's urging. I kept my original accounts and added my husband, but mainly because my student loans are through the same bank and it is easier to pay bills that way. Our main account is my husband's original account, which has most of our bills payed out of already anyway from when we lived together before being married.

@mrbee: Just, just in case. Not necessarily your husband is beating you and you need to run, but just in case. Anything could happen. I just don't like having all my money in one place-bank or account.

Not that it's a lot,LOL, still like it spread out.

@mrbee: My mom always told me to maintain my own separate stash....not quite sure why but maybe it's the just in the case thing.

@MamaMoose: I know it's protected up to a certain amount. I use credit unions, so there are no account fees, at least for now.

We have completely separate accounts, at different banks. We share a credit card which we use for all purchases (for points) and then I manage our money. The savings account is only in my name, but it is ours, and our money. I also have a savings tied to my personal checking, as does my husband. We see no reason to get joint accounts.

We have a total of 3 accounts because we recently married. 2 belonged to me and one belongs to DH. I've always had internet banking acct while he has a Credit Union. Since I'm the #s person, I handle all the finances and we both have access to all accounts.
It works for us.

We each have our own checking and savings accounts and we also have a joint checking, savings, and a money market account. It works great for us and we have no plans to change it.

We have always had completely separate accounts. When we got married, we added a joint account for household items and a joint savings account. We still have our separate accounts. Come January, we are merging our paychecks because I'll be on his insurance and it'll put a hit on his paycheck. We will keep our separate savings and checking accounts, though for our me money.

When we first moved here to tokyo, we went to the bank to open an account. But we found out that they don't allow joint accounts in Japan and everyone has their own accounts. So we ended having to each open an account. Since I don't work, hubby just transfers money into my account. We learned from friends here that most japanese husbands and wives always have several accounts and one of the accounts is always a secret from the other.

We have a mishmash, some accounts are joint, some are not, some abroad, some in the US. We need to sort it out and consolidate.

@mynoahbear: I heard about those "secret" Japanese accounts. I read somewhere those are to help women in case they have to divorce, not surw where I got that from!

I have one that I don't use... I need to start using it.

Both our checking and savings are joint. My parents both have their own savings accounts though.

We have a joint account and we each have our own savings accounts. I have two, one regular with a tidy sum in it, and another high-interest tax-free account with pretty much nothing in it. Plus my own credit card which my DH wants me to get rid of, but after a bout with bad credit, I need every bit available to keep it sparkling. I also have the second card to my husband's credit card.

I would never ever get rid of my own accounts. You never know what could happen.

My family -including my brothers!- think I'm silly for not having a secret stash. I believe in no secrets in a relationship and see no need for a separate stash.

My SIL has a separate stash, my brother knows about it and he's totally fine about it! I'm VERY surprised about that one!
