So in an older post, I talked about how DH and I very rarely agree on names. His #1, Liam, is #4 on babycenter and that made me against it!
However, the more I imagine our first baby (not pregnant yet, LOL!) the more I love that name.
Are you/have you chosen a "top 10" name? Has it been better or worse than you thought it might be?

I chose a top 10 name for my daughter without knowing it but didn't change my mind once I found out. So far I know 1 other little girl with her name. Popular names are usually just really good names so that is just how I look at it but it seems like most people are trying to come up with unique names. I grew up with people mispronouncing my name so I wanted a name for my daughter that was straightforward.

I don't have kids, but I have an extremely popular 80s name (Ashley). I was constantly Ashley H and sometimes had to go by my entire last name because there was another Ashley H in several of my grade school classes. It was a little annoying, but it didn't scar me or anything. At least everyone was familiar with the name and knew how to spell it! And, it was really only a problem in school. Now that I'm in the working world and not constantly interacting with other people born in 1984, it's no big deal.

The popular names now-a-days are much less popular than the most popular names of 30 years ago, just because more names are being used...I haven't looked the numbers up in a while but I think it's something like the top name is barely used for 1% of babies right now, whereras 30 years ago it was used for 4% of babies. So one out of 100 doesn't seem too bad in terms of popularity! The social security website is great to get the true numbers on this trend.

We didn't chose a top 10, but if we had a boy the name is in the top 10. I didn't even look at popularity, we picked family names we like. We literally just made a list of grandparents and great grandparents, my husband picked his favorite names, and I loved his choices (I'd like any old person name) and that was it.
I'd prefer for it not to be soooo popular, but I'm still planning on using the same name if we have a boy next, I'm not going to not use it because of it's popularity. Especially because it's my husband's grandpa's name, so that makes it really special for us.

I didn't consider name popularity when I thought about and chose our LO's name. Even if the name IS popular, the chances of you knowing someone with that name is slim. I don't know any Liam babies. Don't know any Sophies, Madeleines, etc.

Our name is not in the top 100 names but its a well known name. Theres nothign wrong with choosing a popular name, I'd much rather have a popular name than a name that is odd and weird. My name is in the top 20 popular names every year and that doesnt bother me at all because in real life I havent met many people with my name

The only thing I dislike about it is having a gripload of kids in the same class with the same name. But like @twodoghouse said, it doesn't really affect the kids much.

i'm with the PPs above. i don't mind so much that the name is popular - it was popular for a reason. but i don't like how there are like 4 or 5 mikes in one class. and with our common last name, a common first name would make the whole name too common! like john smith too common!

Baby Bear's name is in the top 10.. I wanted a racially ambiguous name, so that's what I went with. LOL

I don't have kids yet, but I have a very common name (Jenny). The pros to common names are that everyone knows how to spell it and how to pronounce it. The con is like what someone mentioned, that there is always another Jenny in the class. And not being unique def bothered me growing up. My ideal kids name would be something not common but people still know how to pronounce and spell it.

I would rather have a popular name than have a ridiculous name. School is such a short time in your life and it seems to be the main time when having a popular name is a pain. A ridiculous name, on the other hand is ridiculous forever.

I have a ridiculously popular name (I am a Jennifer born is 1983), it really wasn't that bad growing up, although now is the first time in my life I have been the only Jennifer in my work/class. You just get used to it, I am not scarred for life by any means. I even like my name. People pretty quickly figure out a way to differentiate between Jennifers, so it is just fine!

I have a top 5 name and I've always loved it! They're popular for a reason : ) I never had an issue by people using my last initial. It was only ever an issue in elementary school...

we chose a top 10 name for our first baby but we didn't know it. even if we had known, we wouldn't have changed our minds, as that was the name we both loved. also, it may be on the top 10 now but who knows where on the list it will be in 10 or 20 years.

I think if you really love the name, then go for it! I also agree with others that if your LO has a popular name, it may be annoying during their school years, but afterward it won't be a big deal at all.

I have a popular name (two of my best friends now have the same name...and my best friend growing up did, too!) - Erin. One of our top names for a baby girl is very popular right now. But, DH and I have a hard time agreeing on names, so we are trying not to worry about popularity.

We wont be considering popularity when naming our baby. Its basically what goes bet with my husband and I's first names as they are what we are using for middle names.

@mamabolt: That's a really good point! I hadn't thought of it like that, but there is way more variety in names than there used to be.
I've ruled out my favorite (Oliver) because it's the #1 boy's name in the UK. I just don't want my kid to be "Oliver W." all the time.
