Speaking of credit card rewards points, which credit card do you have and do you like the rewards program? We are in the market for a new one and there are so many to choose from! We already have amex gold but need a visa or MasterCard for those times that the vendor doesn't accept amex. Any suggestions?

I use a Capital One Visa and it gives you the same amounts as my husband's Chase Sapphire.

I have two cards, the capital one care with 50% more cash back that they keep on advertising. and the bank of america cash rewards that gives 3% on gas, 2% on groceries and 1% on everything else

I had wanted to get the Chase Sapphire at one point too because the benefits seemed so awesome. I was young though, like 18, so I didn't get approved and never reapplied.
I have the Southwest Credit Card. The rewards are okay- we got it because you get two free flights with your first purchase.

I have an Amex and the rewards are alright, but I like the ones on my regular ole Chase Visa better--plus there is no interest for the first year if you happen to be paying something down. (this was the case when I got it a few years ago, anyway)

We have REI and Delta Rewards... both are great for our lifestyle.

We have Discover and love it. Always at least 1% cash back on everything and 5% cash back on different categories each quarter. So right now it's 5% cash back on gas, theme parks and movies. October through December it's 5% cash back on Holiday shopping. You can use the cash back to pay off your bill or use it on Amazon.com or for an upped gift card to a ridiculous number of places (like you pay for a $25 gift card to Applebee's but get a $40 gift card). Plus even without redeeming our cash back Discover randomly sends us gift cards to places!

Fidelity Investment Rewards card gives 1.5% cash back on all purchases. I combine this with the Chase Freedom card (5% cash back on rotating categories like gas, grocery, etc.) and US Bank Cash+ card (5% cash back on 2 categories of your choice like restaurants, home improvement, etc.). I find that this gives me lots of flexibility on my cash back, but it may be too complicated of a system for some people.

@jesslc, are you able to get more than 1c per point on your amex membership rewards? because the annual fee on the gold card is a pricey one which is why i've held off on getting it even though i've been tempted.
my research has told me that if you're transferring your MR points to a partner airline, you can get a ton of value out of the points, but otherwise you might want to look into a different card with a lower/no annual fee.

@sunny: hmm i don't think i have an annual fee on our amex gold card. i know there is one on the platinum of like $500+, which is why we don't have that one, but there are also way more perks.
and yes, we like the amex points because you can use them for airline/travel miles but i think the conversion rate is much lower than if we had a specific airline cc. but, we get the benefit of applying the miles to most airlines, i think.

I have the Costco Amex rewards card. I should look into a Visa one when Amex isn't accepted though. My husband has a Discover. He loves Discover but they're not as widely accepted.

@jesslc my understanding of the amex premier gold was that it was $0 for the first year, and $175 for each year thereafter. there's also the amex gold which is $125 each year. i don't think there is a totally free version.
the platinum has an annual fee of $450.
