Gross. Somewhere recently, O learned to spit. Luckily so far she's not spitting at us, just spitting on the floor, on her toys, etc. She'll be 3 in a little over a week. It's a bid for attention, I get that. But it's so gross. Do we ignore it, hoping it'll go away when it isn't getting the reaction she's looking for? Consequences?

@crazydoglady: this is what my gut says when I'm feeling logical. When she's sitting in front of me it's hard not to react! I think we will shift and try the ignoring route and just cross our fingers she doesn't spit in front of her bio grandparents at her birthday this weekend.

Would making her clean it up do anything? My instinct would be to not get upset, just get a cloth and say “spit stays in your mouth. Clean that up please.”

How do you know she’s doing it for attention? Does she look up to see who noticed?
LO doesn’t like to say “excuse me” on his own after he passes gas or burps. He really likes it when I say “I heard that” as a prompt. So I stopped making the rude behavior fun and gave a longer, less fun directive. He still is slow to say “excuse me” on his own, but he knows he needs to. I wonder if she’s in the beginning stages of forming a habit and doesn’t realize it’s a bad habit because the behavior is just being ignored.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Oh, we haven't been ignoring it. We've been thinking we should, but then in the moment getting frustrated and taking away things like TV or fun activities. It's not working. I can tell she's doing it for attention because she looks at us and smiles waiting for a reaction. If we don't react, she tells us, "I spitted, mama!" @erinbaderin: I will try this. It's the staying calm that's hard!

I would tell her if she is interested in spitting so much, perhaps she would like to go brush her teeth (since it is appropriate to spit in the sink after). Maybe you will get her to brush multiple times per day. hahaha

I find if I say something short and consistent and then ignore that's the best bet for getting my kids to drop stuff like that. But now they get each other going and it's kinda hopeless... the spitting thing makes me so mad, but not as mad as the licking stuff game (kids are 3.5 and 2)....
