The white sink we had in a previous house got stained and scratched on the inside, that bothered me. When we redid out current kitchen we did a large one compartment stainless sink and LOVE it. I do like the look of farmhouse but I worry about it looking dated pretty soon. But I would think in a cabin maybe not?

We have an undermount stainless steel sink similar to the one pictures below. I love it more than my husband and/or kids. We had multiple designers / builders tell us that it would probably date our kitchen to do farmhouse in 2-5 years. Not to mention that replacing it would require new stone and cabinetry.

ETA: It is designed with a slant which I think is sort of the norm now? Also porcelain scratches.

I recently got a new sink. I was shocked at the prices. But, you get what you pay for. Big difference between cheap sinks and more expensive ones. Maybe look into a fireclay farmhouse sink. I got a cast iron because I could only find fireclay in apron style. But yes, you do have to clean them regularly. I also think you have to do some regularly cleaning on the stainless steel. I also didn't like the water stains on stainless steel and you can get some nice ones that supposedly stain less than others, but they can be so pricey too. I have no idea how the resale value of the sink figures in. I have walked into houses when looking to buy and absolutely hated the sink, but it wasn't ever a deal breaker for me.

Also - yes to the suggestion above to look at the slant of the bottom of the sink. A flat sink would be so terrible!

White porcelain will scratch and look terrible pretty quickly. We have that in our last house. We now have white cast iron and I love it! Not a single scratch! Aluminum cookware will make marks on cast iron but they can be buffed out. It’s just a pain and I don’t use aluminum as a result.

I prefer a white sink. A little Bar Keeper’s Friend and it looks brand new. My last kitchen had stainless steel. It scratched easily and always had water marks. The farmhouse look sounds perfect for a cabin.

@Hypatia: Just as an alternative we went with Blanco sinks in our house. They’re made out of silgranit and don’t scratch or stain. They come in many styles, even apron front. I would check them out! We love them and you can get some good deals online.

I don't have one right now, but I highly prefer having one large sink. When I need a smaller receptacle, I can just put a plastic bin in temporarily, then wash it in the dishwasher and get my large space back.

My first thought when you asked about kid friendliness was all the broken dishes with a porcelain sink. It doesn't take much force for dishes dropped in the sink to break against the porcelain. I wouldn't want it for that reason.

@LBee: we had one like this in our previous apartment and I loved it! Yours looks bigger than what we had, but I was just happy that my enormous Dutch oven would easily fit into the sink so it could soak if necessary.

I have an undermount stainless farmhouse sink, best of both worlds! It looks like a farmhouse sink but it is stainless. We love it. It is similar to these (ours has a divider in the middle):

If I have to do either one, definitely stainless. We had the white ceramic sink before, it was disgusting and hard to keep clean. But from your OP seems like you prefer a farmhouse sink more. It may match the style of your cabin better.
