We use the baby bjorn downstairs where we spend most of our time so LO can use it on his own. Then we have the seat and stool upstairs, so that we can help him use that in the morning and before bath. Also, our downstairs powder room has a comfort height toliet (higher than standard) so even with a stool, it was way too high to use with a toliet seat for potty training. I didn't even consider that until we started potty training!

Potty seat, just because it grosses me out to have to dump and clean the bowl of a freestanding potty. Got to use it in conjunction with a little stool though.

We used both as well as nothing at all. At home we started with the little potty (http://amzn.com/B005ZBHYG2) and took it from room to room (we trained both night and day at the same time and having the little potty right next to C's bed was very helpful in the early days) and in the car for outings so we didn't have to tackle public restrooms in the beginning. Once he went back to daycare he had to use a full sized toilet and for hygiene reasons they couldn't have a little potty in the daycare so he learned to use a full sized toilet with no insert at all (take all the clothes off, put him on the back of the seat and have him lean forward and hold the seat and his penis points down and doesn't spray everywhere). At home once he started refusing the little potty we got the insert (http://amzn.com/B005ZBHZEI) and have used that at home ever since. The reason he had to use a full sized toilet at daycare was because the small toilets they had were in the transitions classroom across the center and we potty trained C when he was still in toddlers so they weren't quite equipped for that but as his bladder got better at holding it and he started self initiating he would go down to the other classroom and use the little toilets.

Oops, I voted wrong. We use a standalone potty although the seat can also be detached and placed on the toilet. He's just not tall enough to deal with the big potty, and now that he's trained I like to just let him go by himself into the bathroom and go. With another baby, it's not always convenient for me to have to go and help him get on the big toilet.
