We are closing in our new home in two weeks and the sellers are taking their fridge. I plan to redo the kitchen in 2 years so the fridge we buy now will be the "upgraded" fridge. I'm wondering if anyone here that actually feeds a family of 4+ uses a counter depth fridge. If so, does it actually work for a family that prepares a majority of their meals from home?

Yes and I hate it. That being said it's a side by side so maybe a different configuration would have more useable space?

We have counter depth and I hate it, too. It's just not big enough and is always cramped (it is perfect for my parents who are empty nesters, though!) We are big eaters (2 adults, 2 kiddos). We have a fridge in the basement for extra stuff (back up yogurt, leftovers, extra meat, and beer).

We just got one... I love it! I always felt food was getting lost in the back and going bad. Everything is up front and centre. It isn't as big as our old one for sure, but I think it should be fine. We do have a chest freezer in the basement and a bar fridge for drinks etc. It really depends on the size of your kitchen and layout potential. Our kitchen is pretty small so counter depth was needed.

I very much wish I had a wide counter-depth fridge. Instead I have a narrow deep fridge and it is a pain to organize and stuff always gets overlooked and goes bad in the waaay back.

We have counter depth and I hated it until we got a chest freezer for more space. Now the counter depth fridge is just fine.

I have one and love it in my small condo. But it is tight, and I wish I had a separate freezer for more stuff. I have to limit my Costco trips to what I can fit.

Our builder sold separately the counter depth or standard depth fridge- French doors or side by side. We opted for the standard French and honestly after filling up the fridge I don't know how counter depth would have worked. The mechanism to get water in the fridge takes up so much space already. We don't have a separate freezer and honestly I don't think that would be all that useful since we don't stick up.
A friend of mine has a cool feature with her fridge and snack drawer that has its own handle just like the French freezer drawer. Her family uses it for aluminum soda cans, but I'm sure it can be filled with other stuff.

We just bought one and it's fine! We did buy a small fridge for our basement since it is smaller and we have used that. Mostly we keep beer in it but also it we stock up on stuff, like an extra gallon of milk. I don't know that I would love it if we didn't have the second smaller one.

We ended up finding an extra fridge/freezer (old style freezer up top, had a dent but otherwise fine) on the cheap in as-is at Loews I think. Best purchase ever as our main fridge doesn't hold much. Also I like the old style (freezer on top) if I need to store it things like a full pan of prepped food or a cake or something.

Another thing to look at when selecting a refrigerator is the overall cubic feet. We just upgraded from 22 cubic feet to 25, and it makes such a huge difference! (We also went from french door to side-by-side because we couldn't stand the french door.)
The only time you really need counter depth is if your refrigerator has cabinets on both sides, and in that case it would look weird to have the refrigerator stick out. In most configurations, the refrigerator is on the end of the cabinets, so it doesn't look odd if the refrigerator is deeper.

We had that option with our new house and chose not to get the counter depth one. Would it look better? Yes, but our fridge is so packed full with just me, my husband and toddler I couldn't imagine a smaller one.

We had to make the same decision a couple months ago and went with a standard. I didn't like that I couldn't put a pizza box in it.

If you don't like the look of a large fridge, you can always conceal it as a cabinet. Ikea offers the mounting package.

Thanks all! I think I'm going to go with standard. The kitchen is big enough. Though I dream of having a free standing fridge and free standing freezer in the kitchen as separate appliances. Maybe one day!

I have a counter depth fridge with french doors, and I love it! Ours is a Jenn-Air fridge, and they really maximize the space inside with different drawers and storage spaces. The main reason we went with a counter depth fridge is because we didn't want it to stick out much farther than our kitchen cabinets. The way our kitchen is set up, it wouldn't look good

We have a standard, but we have a fairly wide galley-style kitchen, so the space isn't an issue. And the builders did the surrounding countertops at slightly different depths too (mostly to give a wider walkway out to our family room) -- to me that makes it look more planned (like that side has things of different depths on purpose) as opposed to the fridge really standing out.
