@mrbee: this sounds great and i will definitely sign up soon. i do question how much privacy is really guaranteed though, like you say, it can never be utterly private. And even though you say it will be private from lurkers....does that mean someone has to already be posting regularly to sign up for gold? or can someone technically sign up and lurk as a gold member? (not that i know why anyone would want to do that...)
i think the bottom line should still be that we should be careful what we post and think twice about whether we would want someone we know to find it! although this sounds like we will have to worry about it less.

Heres my convo:
Me: has a new gold feature.
SO: what do you get?
Me:extra boards for members only
SO: we arent paying for that, plus you spend too much time on there anyway.
Me: you just spent $100 on board games.
SO: go for it then

I'm with MsMini. This gives me a very bad taste in my mouth. Is there a way to delete ALL of my content if I decide to leave?
I can see a lot of the boards going gold (hell, half the front page is already) and there being nothing left for those who don't subscribe.

I have to say, as a fairly new member, that I'm disappointed. How do you plan on bringing in new members if they can't really try out the site before they pay? The ads never bothered me. I lurked for a long time while we were TTC and finally joined after I got pregnant. I enjoy the advice on the boards and blogs but I don't know yet if this is something I would spend money on with a baby on the way.

@swedishfish: The site is still completely usable for regular (classic) members. I don't think it will turn away new members at all - they still have access to everything they had last week - they just now have the option of paying for an additional feature.

@Arden: I'm just worried about the possible amount of threads going "gold" in the future.

@swedishfish: I see where you are coming from. I mean if someone signed up for the Gold feature and did it for the privacy factor. Would you want all of your posts in the Gold only section?

@MrsBrewer: There are a ton of posts I make that I don't feel the need to be classified for the gold section. Things like "What stroller do you have" or "What is for dinner" are great topics for the larger group!

I'm pretty torn about this. I'll probably end up getting it, but it does suck for any new users who want a variety of topics. I can totally see a majority of threads going gold and "classic" users not having much to read about besides baby basics...

Just joined HB gold and looking forward to a little more "privacy" on the internet- eek I might even post a pic of me/LO now.

I guess my annoyance comes at the fact that based on the discussion about ad blockers, I have not installed one on my browser, out of consideration for the income of the website builders. I will definitely consider putting one on now, because it seems like there is little to no appreciation for those of us who don't choose to block ads on the website.
You still have to deal with ads on the Gold membership as well, and I can't see myself ever making a Gold post so it seems like a waste of money at this point.

@MsMini: We do appreciate people who don't block our ads, but did want to clear up a potential misperception. Your decision to not install an ad blocker isn't something that has generated ad revenue for us. That's only true of CPM ad campaigns, and we've never run one of those on our site:

I'd rather not be in a position where we have to beg our readers to please not install an ad blocker. This trend towards ad blockers will only continue, and so we have had to explore alternative paths like a Gold program. As more and more people block ads, more websites will either shut down or explore premium programs of their own.

@mrbee: I had no idea people could even block ads, but personally they don't bother me. Knowing they help you guys out, I won't be ad blocking, regardless of being gold or not. Again, thanks for all you guys do...this site has been a lifesaver for me and I will continue to be supportive in any way I can.
