How long did it take until you started feeling better after starting antibiotics? I have never had strep before (or at least never had it diagnosed) and I am absolutely miserable. I finally went to the doctor today and started my antibiotics. Please tell me relief comes soon!

You'll feel it pretty quick, usually a day or two at most the infection starts to calm down noticeably. I've had strep 3 times in the past 2 years (yay kids!) and antibiotics are a blessing. My doc is also awesome and gives me the super strong stuff (Levaquin). If you have amoxicillin or a Z-pack, those are a little less powerful so it may be a bit longer but not likely. Feel better! Oh, and pro tip from a frequent antibiotics user - take a probiotic alongside. Antibiotics mess with your stomach like crazy.

Oh man - strep is the worst - I remember thinking it would be 24 hrs but ended up being more like 48 -

It took me a solid week to feel better. I'm sorry. I had it really bad though, I waited a week before I went to the doctor.

@Mrs. Carrot: good tip. The doc I saw suggested eating yogurt or taking a probiotic, as well. She said antibiotics can cause yeast infections and I'm prone to those.
@Mamaof2: @avivoca: ugggh. I've had this since Friday. I haven't been able to eat since Saturday. I need them to work super fast. And yeah, I have amoxicillin. -
@mediagirl: strep just ravaged my family!! We had a 4 day old and my husband ended up in the ER the strep made him so sick!!! He had to get a shot of antibiotics and be quarantined to a hotel for three days. I went to get swabbed since my throat was sore and I wanted to be sure and of course I was positive too. I wasn't as sick as him so I just got amoxicillin pills. I would say it took a solid 72 hours for both of us to feel better. And DEFI ITELY do probiotics. After finishing the round of antibiotics I ended up with a damn yeast infection which is NOT pleasant at 2 weeks postpartum.

DH gets strep a LoT (5x last year) and it takes a few days to kick in. In the meantime, he uses some magic mouthwash, that has some numbing stuff in it. Can you get some of that???

My son and I had recurrent strep this spring. Started amoxicillin and started feeling better within 1-2 days. Unfortunately it didn't cure it and I started feeling bad again and needed augmentin to cure it! Ugh! Feel better!

@blackbird: yes. My doctor prescribed some for me but it was going to be $45. Insurance doesn't cover it. If it's still bad in another 2 days, I am going to go ahead and buy it.

Within 12 hours, I started to feel better. Ugggh, I had strep 5 times last year. Definitely take probiotics. Throw out your tooth brush too. DS was a carrier of strep. We didn't know since he was asymptomatic. He went on antibiotics and the rest of got better!

@mediagirl: if you don't already have it, get a prescription for diflucan in case you get a yeast infection.

@mediagirl: My doctor told me you can make your own version of "Magic Mouthwash" by mixing 1 part Maalox and 1 part children's Benadryl to gargle.
Also when I had strep he told me sucking on a dill pickle would provide temporary pain relief.

@HLK208: my son had like 4-5 rounds of antibiotics until his finally cleared. Most of the time he was a symptomatic too. I was a crazy person and bought tons of toothbrushes at the dollar store and threw away after one use until we figured out he just needed a stronger antibiotic. Ugh this brings back old yucky sick memories.

DH just got over strep - he came down with it last Monday but they don't prescribe antibiotics for strep here (UK) so he had to power through on his own waiting for it to get better. He garbled with saltwater several times a day and took Tylenol around the clock for a week. By about day 6, he could swallow without grimacing in pain and eat a bit normally. Now, 9 days on, he's back to normal.
I used to get strep A LOT and I always felt better 24 hours after starting antibiotics. Feel better soon!

@Ree723: They don't give antibiotics for strep? Doesn't that just ravage your tonsils?
I had to get my tonsils taken out when I was in college and the ENT said that they were super scarred because I have had numerous bouts of strep that had been undiagnosed/untreated in the past. That is largely why they had to be removed. They were so scarred the bacteria was hiding and could not be completely eliminated even with antibiotics.

The antibiotics don't really test the symptoms. Possibly makes you feel better about a day earlier. The antibiotics are to prevent other complications which are now rare.

I had it last year and it was terrible! The antibiotics didn't work. The only thing that helped was lots of advil and time.
