My OBGYN wants to start me on clomid on our next cycle. Temp shifts and OPKs show I am ovulating, but my RE thinks I am not ovulating strong enough based off my temp rises.
If you were ovulating on your own, did Clomid help you get your BFP?

Yes, I ovulated on my own, but my hormone levels were low in my luteal phase, so I went on clomid and had a cp the first cycle, took a break the next cycle, then conceived Liam on the cycle after that, on clomid.

I Oed on my own and asked the RE about Clomid and TI at first. He basically said there wasn't a point to do TI and not IUI. Clomid takes a toll on your body and I would've hated to take it and not give it my all otherwise.

@LindsayInNY: That's what I am debating right now. I think I am still hoping we will be able to do this with TI, but since I am ovulating, I don't want to waste time. However, I want to exhaust all my options, and this seems like an easier (and cheaper) next step than going straight to an IUI.
bananas / 9229 posts
@Crystal: Is your insurnace covering any of it? Because that's something to keep in mind too. I had one cycle of Clomid with TI (not by choice), two cycles of Clomid with IUI that both failed and it was my third cycle with Femara/Letrozole and IUI that worked. I understand exhausting options but if you can only be on Clomid a limited number of times, are you wasting those times instead of exhausting them?

It worked for me. I was getting + on OPKs, EWCM, etc. but it was kind of messed up. Like, I wasn't ovulating until CD 24-26 or later, which my RE said is a sign of a problem. And then I had a very short luteal phase, would get my period 7-9 days after O. And when I had all my bloodwork my progesterone during my luteal phase was way low.
My RE started me on only 25mg of Clomid and they monitored me with ultrasound. Even 25mg thinned out my lining to the point they weren't sure if they could do the IUI, but they were able to.
So, the Clomid + trigger shot + IUI worked on the first try! Who knows what exactly did it (DH also had issues in addition), but I do think the Clomid helped. But the fact my lining thinned so much means for me, I wouldn't take it without monitoring.
We were very blessed because our insurance covered NOTHING and we paid all out of pocket.

Have you looked at femara as well? From my research, it looks like more effective, doesn't cause problems with CM or lining, less risk of twins, and fewer side effects.

I ovulate on my own and took femara/letrozole for 4 or 5 cycles to try to boost my ovulation and it did nothing, unfortunately. My luteal phase is 14 days and my progesterone has been great. Sorry, I don't have any positive outcomes to give you

I was ovulating, but my RE put me on Clomid to make it "stronger" and did an IUI. I got a BFP on the 3rd cycle, but MC'd. I got another BFP on the second cycle back on Clomid and it was TI (we missed the IUI that month, but still got a BFP.)

This is our next step, too. Hope it works for both of us!

@LindsayInNY: I am covered at 50%, but the rates insurance is billed is so much higher than a cash patient, it practically works out to the same cost. I am really worried about wasting the amount of times I can use clomid on attempts that are set up to fail.
@MrsADS: thank you for sharing! Our issues are unexplained currently, so I am hoping we will be lucky and have it work first time!
@AmeliaBedilia: I'm definitely going to ask about femara. I don't think that is covered under my insurance, though.
@mrs.shinerbock: I really hope we get lucky with clomid and TI. Otherwise we'll move to an iui.
@travellingbee: are you ovulating on your own? FX for us both!
@NorthStar: I hope we both get our BFPs soon. ️

@Crystal: I was "weakly" ovulating and then got pregnant the first cycle with TI and femera. For what it is worth, I have 0 fertility coverage and my insurance covered the generic for femera...go figure
ETA: both the RE and OB said there was no point in IUI's because we knew that the problem wasn't DH. It sounds like dr's are definitely split on that though.
grapefruit / 4028 posts
@owlteach: right now we are unexplained, but all of DHs numbers look great. Your story gives me hope this might work for us!
Did they ever clarify what "weak" ovulation means? Mine hasn't- I need to ask for more details at our next spot.
I feel like the re is pushing us toward ivf because of the higher success rate, but we have no coverage for that.

This worked for my co-worker. She had weak ovulation, and when a cycle of IUI cost $750-$1200, it was worth it to her to try it with TI only. She got pregnant the first cycle doing that, and ended up not needing IUI. I say go for it for at least one cycle. Fingers crossed so hard for you!

If you ask about Femara, see if they can do Letrozole instead. It's the generic version of Femara and is actually used to treat breast cancer (or something like that), so it's typically covered. Each of my prescriptions was only $5. Good luck!
Oh and the benefit to Femara/Letrozole over Clomid is that it isn't supposed to thin your lining like Clomid and there are less side effects. I basically had no symptoms on Letrozole, but have heard of people on Clomid having horrible mood swings..
bananas / 9229 posts
@Crystal: I think the rates billed are higher because they know that the insurance company has a negotiated rate that is lower. I would think 50% is lower regardless. The RE's office should be able to tell you what things will cost.
nectarine / 2834 posts
This was exactly what my OB and I thought was my problem. I was definitely ovulating but not strong enough. I got pregnant on my second cycle of 100 mg of Clomid after no BFPs in 12 cycles.
grapefruit / 4028 posts
@Tidybee: This gives me hope!!! Thank you for sharing!
@LindsayInNY: We did get the costs from the REs office, and found that by using insurance we would save less than $50 per cycle than if we used insurance vs. not. I hate the stupid insurance games.
@NorthStar: Good to know, thank you!
@dc yoga bee: Thank you! I hope this works!

@Crystal: Me. I was ovulating but my doctor said it wasn't a strong enough ovulation. First round of Clomid, pregnant. He put me on progesterone for the first couple months of pregnancy and I'm now 24 weeks.
nectarine / 2192 posts
@Crystal: Femara is officially approved for breast cancer, so it might be covered. Even if it's not, it's cheap. I used goodrx.com and it cost about $12.

I was ovulating on my own and had success with Clomid. We tried for about 20 cycles, DH's SA was normal, my HSG was clear. Got pregnant on my second round of clomid--about 3 cycles after my HSG. The only problem I could see was a very short luteal phase. My doctor put me on Clomid to make everything "stronger". My LP was ranging 8-10ish days (21-23 day cycles). My first round of Clomid my LP was 12 days and a 25 day cycle. So it did help lengthen my cycle a bit. And FWIW, my medication was $9 per cycle.

Yep! Temping showed I was ovulating but my first time on Clomid + iui I got pregnant. I do truly believe it helped!

Subscribing because I believe this will be our next step and I have so many concerns and questions.. I will ask about Femara and Letrozole, because I'm concerned about Clomid's side effects (TCOYF scared me when it talked about lessening your EWCM etc)...
I would like to know exactly what Clomid will do for me, because I feel like my main issue is progesterone (I O every cycle but my LP is only 9-11 days). I am also on my 3rd cycle of acupuncture which is supposed to support follicle development/egg quality. It's just the darn LP that won't lengthen!
I'll let this thread know if my RE has any more details to share about how different rx's are effective...

@badwolf: Last week, my doctor said I had weak ovulation (level 11.83 at CD 21). He prescribed Clomid. What was your experience like? I am afraid of multiples. I am on CD 2 of new cycle and have only a couple of days to make a decision if I want to try Clomid (or not) this cycle. Thanks!
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@mrsleanos2014: I did two cycles of clomid even though I ovulated regularly. My ovulation was somewhat weak and I had suspected poor egg quality because of my age (37). The second one worked. I had 3 food size follicles but am only pregnant with one baby! Good luck!

@travellingbee: Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am age 31. I had an early miscarriage (4-5 weeks preg), back in February. I often wonder if it's because I had weak ovulation and low progesterone. Hence my recent low number of 11.83. I am doing everything in my power to not go through that again.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@mrsleanos2014: I had two miscarriages before the clomid progesterone combo. Are you going to be monitored? If you are just doing climid with no trigger, usually only one egg is still released. If you do a trigger, then you are probably being monitored and you'd know how many eggs would release. I think you should definitely go for it. Your chance of multiples is still very low.
pea / 15 posts
@travellingbee: He prescribed 50mg of Clomid. What's a trigger? I don't think he added that. He does want me to come in on CD 21-23 to check my progesterone levels this cycle.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@mrsleanos2014: a trigger is an injection you do once your follicles (monitored by ultrasound) reach maturity. It releases all of them 36 hours after the injection for better timing. Usually only RE's would do that though. I think regular old clomid sounds good for you.

@mrsleanos2014: My experience was fine. I started on the lowest dose (50?) and took it for one cycle. I was maybe a touch more irritable than normal but nothing extreme. I got pregnant that first cycle and just gave birth to my beautiful daughter on 5/31/15 Clomid did make me ovulate a little sooner than expected (1-2 days) so we almost missed the window, but fortunately happened to do the deed right on ovulation day, so it worked out.

@doxielove: I got pregnant on my second month of clomid (100mg dosage). As you know, we lost the babies, but I'm hopeful clomid will do the trick again.

@Crystal: I just read this whole thread because I'm talking to my OB in a few weeks about clomid after hitting my year mark of TTC and all tests coming back as normal. I saw clomid worked for you but you miscarried. I'm so sorry to hear. Do you have any update? Are you still on clomid and any luck? Sincerely hope it works for you soon
