I have been wondering the same exact thing. Her hair is really fine, but getting a little bit longish so if I put regular sunscreen on it it would be grease city. So far she usually will keep a hat on if I distract her but I think that's going to change.

I find that being firm about hat wearing (and using one that ties under the chin) works well for us. He stopped trying to take it off and just accepted that it was a reality after awhile!

@allison: the weird thing with my LO is that he was fine all winter with the winter hats. So i wonder if it has to do with the texture and the winter hats feel better on his head? who knows. i am on the hunt for softer, but not thick late blankets, summer hats!

@allison: ditto!!! we just made it mandatory!

I wish I could understand how you just make a hat mandatory! I feel like all our outdoor time is a struggle - I put the hat on LO, who screams and pulls away from it the whole time, then he immediately rips it off his head and throws it on the ground. Rinse and repeat. And he's only 12 months, so I can't really reason with about it!

@allison: In my case, when/if he finally gives up he just sits there and sobs. It's pretty pathetic but also heartbreaking! It's so weird because he never minded his winter hat, but thinks sun hats are evil. If I can find a sunscreen that would work just as well, this isn't something I'm going to fight him on - we just end up back inside because he's so upset, and that's no fun for anyone. I'm not looking to turn it into an unnecessary power struggle, I just don't want his scalp to be burnt.

@allison: It sucks! I think kids logic/reasoning skills need to come into play MUCH earlier than it actually happens, haha. I figure that by next summer it will be easier because I can just tell him, "Well, if you want to play outside you have to wear a hat. If you won't put it on then I'm sorry, but we're staying inside." But since the only words my 12 month old understands are dada, mama, bottle, and no, I'm not sure it would have the desired effect, haha.

@2PeasinaPod: I just don't understand why hats are so sad! Sigh. We also get this at bath time - the sitting there sobbing until it's over.

Any recommendations for a spray sunscreen/block that can be used on the scalp? I'm a bit nervous about aerosols but we would be spraying outdoors. Ive heard there are other mineral based sprays that are a bit thinner. Any suggestions?
