I've heard that I'll know when he's ready to not be swaddled anymore. I don't though. How did you know?

@Mrs. Polish: this is a great question!
My son, 12 weeks today, is so ready to lose the swaddle, but so not ready at the same time!
He is in a phase where he is absolutely obsessed with his fingers and hands (shoving them in his mouth and sucking on them). So taking away his hands to swaddle makes him so mad sometimes!
However, the swaddle still works to calm him down, as a sleep cue, to help him sleep longer at night, and for when he is too wiggly during a nursing session.
I don't know what to do!
How old is your LO?

@Mrs. Polish: so you're a little ahead of me. my LO's other issue is that he busts out of swaddles. He's crazy strong. I still can't give up yet though because I really feel he needs it to sleep

She kept busting her arms out. But she still responded well to be swaddled as a cue it was night time. So we bough Halo swaddle sacks and swaddle arms out and so far working great.

@cmomma17: that's why I wonder if he's ready. He wakes every morning with his left arm out. I went in this morning and took his arms out and wrapped his body. He slept pretty good for another hour. We'll try it again tonight.

I stopped swaddling when my girls could roll over (4 months for my girls), because a sealed baby can roll over but not get back. That would wind them up on their tummy without hands to push their face out of the mattress.

I stopped as soon as both my girls could roll over for the same reasons as @Mrs. Jacks.

@Mrs. Jacks: after baby starts to roll though, are sleep sacks like Halo still a good option?
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@delight: Yes, they are great because they are able to independently move their arms, which means they can maneuver out of any bad situations they get themselves into. Our 16 month old is still in a sleep sack (when it's cool enough to wear one). It actually also helps with climbing out of the crib.

@Mrs. Jacks: ok thanks! Just trying to figure out what I need for baby's arrival. I have a few swaddle blankets and a Halo sleep sack for now. Good to hear you can use the sleep sacks for a long time!

@delight: They are now one of my go-to gifts for baby showers!

We kept the swaddle for a long time because she was a late roller and I didn't want to mess with a good thing. After I saw her roll back to front in the swaddle we switched to halo sleepsacks which we love.

@Mrs. Jacks: I was super excited to find a fleece Halo on sale for 8$ at Winners this week. I wish they had more sizes! Although I shouldn't buy too much.
Don't some infants not like being swaddled? Also I hear mixed reviews from people that you should/shouldn't swaddle. Ahhhh it's so confusing!

Once LO was able to roll over, we started swaddling her from the chest down only, with her arms out (probably around 4ish months?).

We're going cold turkey tonight and putting him down went perfectly. Fingers crossed for the rest of the night!

@Smurfette: I used the SwaddleMe with his arms out. We have some sleepsacks but they're all too big for him now.

@Mrs. Polish: ooh, my fingers are crossed for you! Please update in the am!
Sounds like I might need to invest in a halo sleep sack

I am wondering too. Just posted about it!!! We are going to try a sleep sack tonight but I'm scared.

Anyone have suggestions on how to keep his hands warm? He wakes up because they're cold, I think.

@Mrs. Polish: I put LO in the Gerber sleep gowns with the mitten cuffs because her hands are always cold! She's still able to put her (mittened) hands in her mouth, but they stay warm!

Around 12 weeks we quit swaddling cold turkey. She was waking me up once a night not to feed, but would be happy as soon as I unswaddled her, then fall right back to sleep.
