Have you ever used the swaddleme blanket in the carseat? I was wondering what the slit in the back was for and discovered it is to put the buckle of a carseat or swing through. Basically you lay the blanket down, then buckle baby into seat, then wrap the Velcro parts.
Have you done this? Is it actually safe? Would definitely make it impossible to take the baby out of the seat without waking her.

Sounds like it would be difficult to get her out without waking, but if it works for a peaceful car ride, then maybe after you're down with the trip you can just let her sleep in there when you get home and avoid the transition out of the carseat while she's sleeping.

We used those blankets for 5 months and I never knew what the slit was for! I sort of decided it had something to do with checking the diaper. My mind is blown!
That doesn't sound super helpful to me.

@MrsF: I assumed it was for diaper checking too, but I was like, but how? What am I missing. So while feeding her at 3 am I googled

I never had those blankets. But sounds like it might only be useful for a long car ride like a road trip - but I don't see the point since the motion of a moving car typically helps babies sleep.
Also, swaddling while driving doesn't sound too safe.

@californiadreams: sadly I got one of those babies that doesn't usually fall asleep in the car. So if it works it would be helpful on a long car trip, I guess, but I agree it doesn't sound that safe.

@Cole: nope, this is what it says on the toys r us website in the product description: Car seat and swing harnesses fit through the back-access slit on the SwaddleMe blanket. Once baby has been buckled into the car seat, the SwaddleMe wings fasten snugly over baby for comfort and warmth on the go.

I've heard of these. the tech consensus I've seen is.... Not safe!! Nothing should go between baby & the actual seat unless the car seat manufacturer specifies that the product is made for their seat (ie. infant insert, seat manufacturers head cushion insert, etc). It can cause fit issues that can affect the seats performance in an accident. Eek!

@Foodnerd81: I used the slit in the swaddleme 1 time when my baby was a week old in the Rock n Play-- and actually, one of my husband's friends figured it out by googling what the slit was for when he was over to meet the baby. Lol.
So we all tried it once, and then never used it again. Generally speaking, our baby sleeps unswaddled during the day and swaddled in Her crib at night, so there's been no need.

Any time you use after market products that could potentially interfere with the seat you are essentially using your baby as a crash test dummy since it was never tested with your seat by the manufacturer.

Hm, if I'm picturing it correctly, wouldn't it be the equivalent of just putting a blanket over baby in the front and the equivalent of having an extra thin layer on baby in the back? I can understand how readjusting the belt for fitting baby in the seat if you've put him in a heavy coat or something would affect the safety of the car seat, but I'm not understanding how this would.
I'd like to hear more on it though, because LO has a bunch of these swaddle wraps and the only reason we haven't used them in the car is because it's still pretty hot here + my air conditioning isn't the greatest, so I'm fearful of him getting too hot in the car as it is :S
ETA: I guess I'm just not understanding because I thought the safety issue was about things going between baby and the harness, wheres as things go over the harness, just like laying a blanket over baby, if I understand correctly.

We used it in the swing for weeks and weeks. It was the only way he slept. I loved that we could do it. Eventually we just buckled him in around the swaddle.

We let her sleep in the rock and play a lot, swaddled, and just don't buckle her in. She can't even roll over or lift her head up, she's not going anywhere.
Funny that no one knows why the slit is for though

@ZombieBullfrogHoller: It really is like @navy_mommy described. Unless the car seat manufacturer made it for their specific seat the product has not gone through car seat crash testing. It may ultimately be fine, but there is no tested evidence that supports its use AND it would/could void your warranty or even affect your insurance companies replacing the seats after an accident.
Just not worth it's use in my book.

Our car insurance company won't replace the car seat if it's in an accident with those extra bundle-me things in use. Something else to consider if you are thinking about it.

Going against the grain and saying yes, I have done it.we had a few weeks where she would scream the whole time we were in the car. So, I used it a few times on long solo car rides when I couldn't sit back there with her to try to keep her calm. It made a HUGE difference.

@bpcmarj: that's interesting. I wonder if she would like stroller rides with the car seat if I swaddled her in like that. It might help at least get her used to the car seat and maybe shed calm down in the car too.

@Foodnerd81: we only had to do it for like 3 weeks, max. And it was on like hour+ trips. She was around 3 months old if I remember correctly.
