Sweatpants in public

@Mrs. Pen: @Mrs. Jump Rope: We couldn't wear sweatpants to class in college! We had to dress up. No flip flops even!

I can't even remember the last time I wore sweatpants. I love my yoga pants through-and-through though. I wear them to Walmart, but I feel like I should wear real pants to Target. Is that weird?

I will wear yoga pants/sweatpants to the store down the street if it is late at night and I need to grab something really quick.

Otherwise I can't bring myself to do it. I don't really care when others wear them though.

@looch: You're totally right! And for that matter, just who do I think I am running around in trousers/pants . . . skirts/dresses are what proper ladies wear!

I just hate the everything has become so lax . . . sweat pants at school, no real words in text messages . . . it's like we are sliding toward being the sloppy-sweat-suit-wearing-hover-chair-riding-drink-slurping-society portrayed in WALL-E.

@photojane: LOL @ the difference between Wal-Mart and Target!

Never! I won't leave the house in sweats/pjs/yoga pants. DH thinks I'm crazy when he wants us to run to Kroger at 10pm and I change before we leave. I just can't do it.

That might change once I have a baby and am pp!

@photojane: no flip flops?! I live in those. Girls would wear flippies in the dead of winter. I'm totally one of those girls.

I drive my husband nuts because I only wear flips or go barefoot in the summer. And I wear flip flops until weve got snow on the ground.

    That rule would be awful.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I live near the beach, so we do flips and sandals year round too! I love them. We couldn't even do sandals. My brother went to the same school, and when he went guys had to wear ties & girls had to wear dresses. I'm just glad I got to wear pants!

@photojane: jealous of you living near the beach! I'm dying for a beach trip.

My brother had to wear a tie and jacket with khakis or dark pants to high school. My sister had to wear a skirt & was allowed a sweater. Catholic school uniforms!

I throw on yoga pants. I'll wear them if I have to run the market though!

I almost ALWAYS change into jeans before I leave the house! BUT immediately after Xander was born, I wore yoga pants like you would not believe! No way was I putting on jeans during those first few weeks!

I don't see much excuse for wearing sweats in public, to be honest. Unless you're going to or from the gym. It takes 5 seconds to throw on jeans.

Never. It takes 5 seconds to put on jeans. The only time I wear yoga pants or workout wear out is when I stop somewhere after working out...

If I want to be comfy I wear leggings instead of jeans with a nice but comfortable top.

i wore sweatpants out the other night. i felt like such a rebel! it was 10pm and i realized we were out of cat food for the morning. so i went to super walmart... in sweatpants! i figured it was walmart, who there was going to judge me for wearing sweatpants out at night? i don't make it a habit though. i do sometimes where lounge pants for school drop off in the morning, then i go home and shower & get dressed for the day.

Not unless I'm sick or camping. I'll wear gym clothes to run an errand, or rock yoga pants and a hoodie while grabbing an early morning coffee on the weekend, but otherwise, no.

I never wore sweats in college, either. I was in a sorority and it was totally taboo to dress down when "representing your house" on campus. Kind of an eye roll, but it taught me to buck up and take pride in my appearance a good majority of the time.

@loveisstrange: @MamaJ: I just find jeans so uncomfortable! I did finally find a pair from banana republic that I don't mind, but I hate wearing jeans period. Usually I wear dresses or else my ponte pants. But either way- yes it doesn't take long to throw on pants.

    Sweat pants/yoga pants - YES!
    Pajama bottoms - NO!

    @photojane: That is tragic!

@loveisstrange: I hate jeans SO much. It's probably a weight thing, or a haven't tried hard enough to find the right pair thing, but they are way too uncomfortable to me!

Sweatpants no, yoga pants...yes I feel like black yoga pants look nicer, but actual sweatpants look sloppy...I'm weird.

I'm all about sweats in public.

And I'm not talking just yoga pants....I mean huge baggy sweats with slippers and my husband'a fleece.

    It's about the face anyway.....right?

ETA: I just got back from my morning Bible study at a coffee shop, at which I wore huge baggy sweats, UGG slippers, and Lululemon hoodie. No shame.

@Mrs. Pen: @swurlygurl: I guess for me, I'll deal with jeans. The "dependapotamus" military wife stereotype is one of "fat, wears sweats, doesn't take care of herself, etc" and I don't want to be seen that way. Life on a base is like effing high school. *sigh*

    @loveisstrange: jeans are so uncomfortable!

  21. loveisstrange

@Rainbow Sprinkles: meh. I guess it's just personal preference. I don't find them uncomfortable as long as they fit properly.

@Mrs. Pen: I just did it today to take the girls to a local hotel pool for open swim. I hate trying to get into regular pants when my legs are still all damp, so I did it for comfort. We were only "outside" for about two minutes, and the rest of the time we were swimming. I won't weigh in because Mr. T took away a shirt that had holes in the armpits so I wouldn't wear it out of the house ever again. So clearly I am not someone who's opinion anyone ought take too seriously on fashion.

@MsLipGloss: The no real words in text messages kill me. KILL ME! Damnit, i just realized something though. I did wear sweatpants once because LO had fallen asleep in the Ergo and i couldn't change out of them. But i think that was the only time!

  24. shinymama

I think it's your overall appearance that determines whether they're OK or not. I have worn yoga pants and a fitted hoodie to run errands, but I was also wearing make-up, minimal jewelry, and my hair was done. Could I have worn jeans instead? Sure, but I went for comfort.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that attire/clothing alone doesn't determine whether you're dressed appropriately or not. Some of the ladies at work roll in wearing the latest fashions from Banana Republic, but when it's wrinkled, and paired with uncombed hair and last night's make-up, it's no better than sweats in public {in my opinion}.

  25. deerylou

    pomegranate / 3003 posts

@shinymama: Completely agree. I don't usually concern myself with a full face of makeup, and my hair is usually in a top knot, but some tinted lip gloss, and a pair of studs go a long way if I'm running to Target in yoga pants.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Baaahahah, yes. This is me exactly. The best is the big sweats tucked into the top of Uggs...total fashion statement!

I do wear yoga pants sometimes. I think if I have showered, done my hair and put on make-up then I'm fine.

I don't like velour suits and pajama pants! Sweats on college kids is okay but I would never wear them.

  28. Rainbow Sprinkles

@ms.janedoe: omg yes!!!!! But the sweats are so big that they spill over the side of the boots....

In the winter, when it's cold, I don't give a *, I want to be warm and comfy! lol! Especially if it's something like going to a class or supermarket. I did buy some of those slimmer cut, sweatpants pants from H&M and Forever 21 before, I think they don't look as frumpy.

@photojane: wow. your school has a dress code?! that's crazy!

well... I guess not too out there. I looked at Bob Jones University when I was in high school but the stringent rules made me pass (even jeans aren't allowed on campus).

Um, no. Yoga pants are fine in my book and I do wear them for errands sometimes but sweatpants/pajamas definitely not.

@Mrs. Pen: I went to Liberty University, but Bob Jones made us look liberal!

@Mrs. Pen: Bob Jones as in Bob Jones the Christian Homeschool curriculum?

That's what my mom used for us!

  38. Mrs. Pen

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I think so! that's why I originally looked into the school!

  40. MamaJ

    pear / 1609 posts

    @Mrs. Pen: I guess it's because I don't find jeans uncomfortable

@shinymama: good point! I'm usually in a decent outfit but no make up and hair in a bun because I'm too lazy to do it (and my hair is a nightmare to tame when I wear I down!)
