We are planning DS's first birthday and since we can't hang anything on the walls - the decorations we are using I want to be bold and beautiful.
Our colors are bright: green, navy, yellow and grey. For the food table I want to do a garland or banner of some sort, one of us wants do do a traditional pennant banner and the other wants to do a tassel garland.
The one who doesn't want a tassel garland thinks it's too feminine. So we consult HB: tassel garland yay or nay

I think if you keep flat colors (not shiny like the silver in the example) the tassel garland would be fine for a boy though.

@runsyellowlites: I tried to find a picture that was quite neutral but most had metallics. If we go with the tassels, I will DIY it.

I don't think of them as gender specific any more than balloons are gender specific. I say go for it.

We're going to do a mix of bunting and rag/scrappy garland, like the bottom picture here.
I think you could pull off tassels for a boy.

I think they are both too cute! Perhaps it's just the metallic that's making it a little "feminine"? I think if you swapped the silver with navy, it'd look pretty masculine!

It's for a BABY- you have the rest of your life to do Tonka Truck/Superman/Thomas the Tank Engine themed birthday parties. Who cares if a tassel garland is kind of "pretty"? I say, make your party decor as cute as you want now, because when he's two and cries because he wants an Elmo cake, you'll at least have photos of your pretty, Pinterest-worthy party to look back on. 
FWIW, I don't think that tassel garland is feminine at all.

I like the pennant banner better...not because I think the tassel garland is necessarily feminine, but to me they look like Pom-poms. I was a cheerleader in high school, though, so it could be my inner-cheerleader coming out

I prefer the pennant as well. I like the tassel trend, but like @lawbee11 for reason they are reminding me of Pom poms?

I think for a baby the tassels are fine! If it were a teenage boy.... no. But you can get away with these things with little ones.

I like the tassels, pendants are getting to be everywhere lately, so tassels are new & cute. I think the ones in your picture are actually more boy-ish than feminine. I like them!
