We are going to have a little garden this summer with the girls, but before we start anything I want to teach them a little bit about gardening and how things grow from a seed. So that they can understand what exactly we are doing. Are there any fun/simple ways to do this? Or books about gardening?

I'm obsessed with a book called Up, Down, and Around by Katherine Ayres. It's about planting seeds, and some plants grow up, some grow down (like carrots), and other's grow around (things on vines). At the end they pick the vegetables and eat lunch. It's repetitive and catchy so my almost 2 year olds can read along with me. We also started some seeds in doors in our kitchen window, but they don't seem to care about those yet.

I honestly think they don't get it till they see it and are a part of it! You can definitely explain it though! DD1 loves being a part of our garden! We've been growing seeds indoors and they both get super excited to water and see the sprouts!

How about the seed in a wet paper towel in a clear plastic cup thing that most preschools do in the spring?

When I was in third grade, we soaked some seeds in water and then put them in a clear plastic bag with a wet papertowel. Then we taped them to a window and you could watch the sprouting. When the roots were developed enough, we transplanted them into pots.

Try From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons. I also love The Empty Pot by Demi. It isn't strictly about gardening, but it is fantastic.
