At what age would you teach your lo about the facts of birth? Would you let your 4 year old watch the tv show "a baby story" if they seemed interested or do you think it is too graphic?

I think that that show might scare them a little since sometimes the women yell. I was introduced to birth through animals (we had a farm), and it was a really neat experience. I had seen hundreds of animals be born, and yet when my mother asked if I'd like to be in the room when my little sister was born, I declined because seeing a human be born was way more scary. Maybe start with animals, since you can learn about birth and see how she reacts, without seeing grown women yell and cry?
In the long run, I doubt watching that show would really be horrible, but you never know.

As a doula, future certified birth educator, and all-around birth junkie, ha! trust me, my kids are gonna know a thing or two about the birthing process. My son has been watching A Baby Story with me (when I can stomach to watch it, generally does some serious damage to my blood pressure), as well as much more graphic, unblurred birth videos on YouTube since he was 3 and we talk about it and he jumps up and down and cheers when the baby is born, "The baby came out! Look Mom, the baby came out!" Birth and birth talk is going to be a normal part of their growing-up years, given my passion, so I guess I've never really shielded him from it. Nor his younger sister- she just hasn't started paying attention like he has yet, lol.

Okay so I let her watch one and if she was scared she didn't show it, she just asked a ton of questions! "Is that bloooood??" "Wow that's a lot of blood!" "Is the baby okay?" "Awwww what a cute little baby!"

@cyndistar3: Honestly, and this is just my hippie theory, but I think the younger they are, the more instinctively they know that those sounds and faces are normal and part of birth.

@FarmWifeGina: I think you are absolutely right! I was really amazed that she was so accepting of everything.

@cyndistar3: I really never thought I would be the type do this, but if they seem like they can handle it or want to be there, both of our children will be there when Cricket is born here in our home this fall. We'll see. I can see Tractor Girl not being into it or getting bored quickly, wanting to be entertained, but Deere Boy is the sweetest, most caring and compassionate and comforting little man when someone is struggling or in pain, I think he will be a super little labor companion, he will want to be there with his momma. Waaaaaah! Now I'm crying thinking about it.

Perhaps not exactly the same, but DD knows about my c-section scar and sometimes ask to see it. She knows that is where she came out of.

I let ds watch the little computer animated videos on baby center with me. It helped him to see what was going on inside, and it had a labor video that wasn't graphic at all, but it showed the fundamentals.

@FarmWifeGina: I thought about it but my daughter is very much an attention seeker so I just know she would do what ever she could to get in the middle of things and I don't know if I could handle the millions of questions while I am trying to birth a child.

@cyndistar3: Yeah, that's how Tractor Girl is too. But Deere Boy is pretty sensitive when he needs to be. Regardless, if it happens or not, there will be an adult there just for them, to take care of them and occupy them, in the birthing room or out.

@MamaBehr: I had to show my lo the incision when her sister was born because she kept trying to jump up on my lap, I thought she would freak out and get scared but she just wanted to give it kisses all the time lol.
@katiew92081: I totally forgot about those little animated videos, I will have to show her some of those!

@FarmWifeGina: my lo is a mix of the two, she is super sweet and caring, she would totally try to make me feel better but if anyone is paying more attention to someone other than her she will do all sorts of things to get their attention, I have no idea which side would emerge! Lol

We grew up on a farm, so it was always general knowledge around our house. I see no harm in letting kids be exposed to birth stuff from a young age. You don't have to clue them in on the whole story until later.

@lemondrop: I don't know that I would have ever figured the whole sex thing if it hasn't been for being around the cows.
Deere Boy has already seen the goat kid this spring and I have a cow set to calve any day now (any minute, really) and if that happens in the daytime, I'll haul him out to watch that too. He's 4 and at an age of being super curious about that kind of stuff.
