Until now we had just used teething tablets, which seemed to do nothing. A friend gave me a half-used tube of Baby Orajel "Natural" and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use it. I tried to put it on her (future) teeth with my finger, while my husband held her down, but she just moved her tongue and her mouth so much I am sure it didn't do anything! Is there some secret to applying this stuff?

I would really suggest not using teething gel. It numbs their gums but if it gets down into their throat it can affect breathing. (Unless the "natural" kind is different?)

Yeah I dont think teething gel works, even on adults when I would use gel for a sore tooth it doesnt do much. It just numbs your tongue a little

I had the natural gel, I tried it out on my tongue and I didn't feel any difference, so I didn't end up using it. I tried two natural varieties, FWIW.

@MamaMoose: I don't know... it smells strongly of cloves. I was too paranoid to ever use gel before but now that she's almost one and someone gave it to me, I thought, might as well try! You're probably right, it's probably not even worth the energy it takes to try and apply it anyway.

Does she take a paci? Apply it directly to the paci and let her suck on it, always worked for LO

The natural Orajel gel is just a gel form of the tablets. It doesn't actually numb anything. I think it's marketing at work. People are used to gel - we'll give them gel, even it contains the same ingredient (chamomile) as the tablets. That said, we found the gel easier for our LO than the tablets.

@BlueWolverine: Oh, so if she swallows it I guess it's good then! It smells strongly of cloves which I've heard are a natural toothache remedy.
