If you had a small baby, what size clothes and diapers did he/she wear? preemie? newborn? (and if you can share the birth weight as well, that would be helpful!) I'm trying to figure out how much preemie v. nb clothes we're going to need, and the clothes seem all over the map in terms of sizing and fit. So any specific brands that worked best for your small baby would be helpful as well!

@Pirouette: Birth weight 4.5 lbs... he was in the NICU for 10 days.. when we left the hospital he was a little under 4.5 lbs. He wore preemie diapers and preemie clothes. The preemie clothes were HUGE on him.

LO was 8 lbs 12 oz at birth. We have a few Carter's and GAP NB size that fit, but a lot of the other stuff does not. We mainly put her in 0-3.

Best brands for preemie clothes- Carters. I found all the other brands ran large.

I found that carter's gerber's, and old navy ran the smallest. Baby gap ran very large.

@Pirouette: how small are we talking? My LO was not THAT small (full term) at 6 lbs, 10 oz, but her NB clothes were swimming on her the first week or two, then she grew into them and wore NB until she was 2 1/2-3 months. She is 4 months now and a lot of her 3 months clothes are still kinda big on her.
Gerber onesies and sleep-n-plays tend to be the smallest, so we liked those a lot the first couple of weeks. Gap and Old Navy and Walmart are pretty huge. She still can't fit in some of the 3 months stuff from there at this point and she's 13 lbs now.

We brought home DD at 4lbs8ozs, so she was a teeny thing. Carter preemie onesies for a month or so worked for us, as well as sleep n plays. She actually had a preemie jacket she wore until she was almost 2 months old. She was a winter baby, so she was always in tons of clothing, so newborn stuff fit on her as an outer layer.

@littlek: good to know! i was thinking of looking at carters preemie. how long was he in preemie diapers?
@hilsy85: even the baby gap nb (up to 7 lbs) size? i thought that might work if she's in between preemie and nb size.
@Anagram: we're hoping she'll clear 6 lbs but at this point it depends when she has to come out. she was 4lbs 3 oz at 34.5 weeks, and we're trying to make it to 37 weeks (so hopefully she'd clear 5lbs at least). i'm guessing she will be between 5-6 lbs at birth. She's IUGR so it just depends on her growth over the next 2 weeks whether they'll let her cook a little longer and hopefully be closer to or over 6!
@meganmp: good to know about the layering, since she's a winter baby as well!

DS was in preemie diapers for about 2-3 weeks and we just put him in Carter's NB clothing. They were HUGE on him, but he stay swaddled and slept a lot so it was fine. We also kept him in side snap tees.

My son was 6 18oz leaving the hospital & his Carter's NB fit with some room to grow. He was 7.8 at birth though and wore NB until he was 8w (unless it was Gap, then it lasted longer).
Ralph Lauren runs true to size or even small. Honestly, I'd even say a RL 0-3m outfit would fit like NB. -
DD was born at 6lbs 6oz and dropped down to 5lbs15oz. Carter's preemie onesies fit her for just over a week before I put her in newborn sizes, which were so big for a while. Now, at 5weeks they are fitting really well.

LO was 6.4lbs born at 36 weeks, drobbed to 5.7lbs. I loved carters and gerber both newborn. She was in them for a couple of months atleast and in NB diapers for a couple months also. Goodluck!

He was 6lbs, 4oz and wore newborn until 1.5 months. Maybe buy just a few premie outfits just in case? We kept J swaddled in a blanket and nothing else often in the first few weeks so it may not matter much?

LO was 7,1 and she wore NB clothes for one month. She went through about 400 NB diapers which was just over a month's worth. I think we switched to size 1 diapers around 9lbs.

6 pounds 12 ounces, 10 days late! To top it off, she was long for her weight - 20 inches. She was in newborn for a few weeks, and then 0-3 for a few months. We didn't have a ton of newborn stuff, but we just made due with 5 or 6 sleepers. I'd not worry about it too much, honestly. You probably live near enough to a store that sells them, if you run low.

@marionberry: that's what I was kinda thinking...between layering and keeping her swaddled, I mean we're not going very far those first few weeks! I just want to make sure she's warm enough.
@sarac: yea it's a little tough in NYC because I don't have a car, and won't want to be treking around those first few weeks, but I'm sure I could always send a parent on a clothes run
Sounds like the consensus is carters is smaller and she won't be fitting into the baby gap stuff for a little while

I don't know what small is to you but the tech in the delivery room said she was small, a peanut, and dd was 7lb2oz. She was in NB for 6-8 weeks but never preemie.

@Pirouette: Amazon? Anyway, there are ways. Even if you have too little of something, you'll be able to deal without terribly too much effort.

LO wasn't that small - 6lbs 7 oz. at birth. Lost about a pound when we were discharged. Carter's NB fit the best. Their Preemie size is seriously teeny. She could it preemie maybe the first week?
We snagged a pack of Preemie Pampers at the hospital and used them all up. Baby Gap's smallest size "up to 7lbs" was still pretty wide. Fit for awhile. Fit Carter's NB for about 8 weeks. -
@shopaholic: yea if she makes it to or around 6lbs it sounds like carters nb is the way to go and maybe one or two preemie size - it's ok if things are big on her, she's not walking or crawling anywhere yet! The preemie pampers are so expensive! Hopefully we could just grab from the hospital, or ive heard you can just fold down the flap on nb size and it's basically the same!

T was born 5 lb 5 oz at full term (38 w) and we brought him home at 4 lb 13 oz. tiny!! I had no preemie outfits except his Janie and jack going home outfit and it was so big on him it was a joke!!!!
Carter's preemie is smallest. We wore those for a few weeks. Then Gymboree preemie. By a month old he could fit into newborn sized stuff (he was over 7 lbs by then). Gap does run huge!!! Old navy is small too. We were in newborn stuff til maybe 6-8 wks then wore 0-3 for awhile.

@Pirouette: BFF had twins & i nannied for newborn twins, all of which were born between 4lbs 5oz and 6lbs 1oz, and none of them ever wore preemie diapers, not even the smallest when they dropped a few ozs. snag some from the hospital if you need them, amazon or diapers.com can get you more the next day if you need more. unless she's <4lbs, i don't think you'll need them at all. i would suggest making sure have you a few hats though, and some mitts (or just use socks as mitts), and socks that stay well since tiny babies often have a hard time keeping their temps up so she's probably going to need to keep her head covered for a bit til she gets bigger.

Oh also we didn't use preemke diapers. He could have used them the first few weeks but we just did newborns and folded them over on top away from his belly button. They were big for a few weeks but it was fine!
T was not preemie so we didn't have any issues with body heat or any other health issues thank goodness.

@winniebee: thats realistically pretty much where I think she might be weight wise (even though I'm hoping she can cook a little longer and reach 5.5-6) so that's super helpful. I actually just got a gift card to gymboree but had no idea they sell preemie, I'll have to check it out!@mrs. bird: I was thinking of ordering some cheap hats since her head is measuring so small - the hats we have probably wont fit her for a loooong time! I feel like she'd definitely fit preemie size for that.

@Pirouette: Sounds like the same thing with DS. He was born at 39 weeks at 5 lbs 11.5 oz and left hospital at 5 lbs 5.5oz. Some newborn clothes were big but preemie clothes never fit. I liked Carters newborn size the best for him at first.
We had issues with diapers too. Tried preemie and newborn and they all leaked, I don't know why. -
LO was 4 lbs 11 oz when she left the hospital. We had only two preemie outfits, otherwise she just wore newborn and swam in them for awhile! We liked gowns for her, because sleepers her legs would come out of the leg holes. Halo sleepsacks didn't work because she could actually scrunch herself down completely in the sleep sack, which was scary! Use blankets or a woombie to swaddle.

Also had trouble swaddling him with blankets (so big) so we ended up using the swaddle me Velcro blankets

@LemonLong: @winniebee: oh I didn't think of swaddling issues! We have a and a blankets and swaddle mes, so I guess we'll see what works best. We also were gifted some halo sleep sacks, but I guess they may not work for her, at least not at first. They look huge to me even in the nb size!
