I was surprised by how well LO did on the flight, the actual flight itself was so soothing, like white noise. I splurged for first class to have more space with a lap infant (who just barely qualifies since he's almost 2) and it was a good choice! So upgrade if you can!

@spaniellove: J likes the carrier right? My boys travelled so well in the carrier. The noise of the plane was great. I agree with PP if you can swing it first class will give you more space.

I wore my son through security in the Ergo and held him in my arms on the plane. I wore comfy loose clothes and Crocs - nothing that would be hard to wrangle myself out of in security. I brought a big fleece shawl in lieu of a coat to use as a blanket to play on during layovers and to cover DS up on the plane to give him some darkness to sleep. I got a window seat on the lefthand side of the plane because thats the arm I favor when I bottle feed my son. If he has a meltdown on the plane, go to the bathroom ASAP and let him just cry it out. Mine needed to scream for 10 minutes in the Ergo and then fell asleep once he wore himself out.

We're trying to decide between a 6 hr direct flight and then 3 hr drive or flying into the city we actually want which would require a layover and more flying but only an hour of driving at the end. (We're only going to my parents' house for an early first birthday party, I wish it were more exciting!)
Do you think if we got a row of 3 across seats and gave him the window seat in his car seat he might sleep during an evening/night flight?

I think you need to plan for the worst and then be pleasantly surprised when it goes better than you thought!
We've done all kinds of combinations, flying at naptime, flying overnight, etc and the only thing that is consistent is that my son doesn't sleep as deep or as long as when we're home. So, do what makes it easiest for you as parents.

@spaniellove: if your LO travels well in the car I'd do the three hour drive since layover plus flight plus cardrive is probably longer.
If you have to chance to bring your carseat (i.e. he's not flying as a lap child) then there's a good chance he'll sleep. Planes vibrate a lot and that seems pretty soothing to the LOs.
