I've been using these crappy paper blackout shades for LOs room for the last 20 months.

They work okay but a lot of light escapes around the edges so I tape them down with painters tape and it looks awful. Then I put curtains over that.
Need a new solution. I like LO's room pretty dark. What kind of shades do you use (under the curtains) - gimme links!! Thanks!

@lady grey: I bought regular curtains that I like, then sewed this blackout liner to the back--just one straight line at the top--they aren't attached all the way down.

We were lucky that the house we bought already had black out accordion or pleated blinds. I'm not really sure how expensive they are but they're awesome.

They are pricey up front but do an amazing job blocking out the light. We also plan on these being his window coverings forever so it's not such a huge investment over 18+ years. I also like that they are cordless and that they are enough on their own, no need for a curtain.
I just ordered blackout honeycomb blinds for my bedroom, haven't installed them yet though. I'm hoping they do a good job!

If you just need something to go under an exisiting curtain how about roller shades? They work really well blocking the light!

@Anagram: Same. I sewed my own. Very easy. Just find curtains you like so you don't have to mess with hemming them. Measure the liner length, hem. Put the right sides together with the blackout liner a bit narrower than the curtain fabric, then turn right side out. Voila.

@Anagram: Yup, that's what our plantation shutters look like too! Which is why they are now covered with drapes. I hate that I covered them up (because I do love them), but a dark nursery is more important for now.

I got the same liner as @Anagram: and got really lazy while pregnant and on bedrest so I just hung a double rod and use the liner as a separate layer.

We bought cheapo black out white curtains from Walmart and then put up pretty curtains in front of them. They work great.

@Jess1483: I thought of that....and I have also successfully used black trash bags at the grandparents house...but hoping to find another option 
@mediagirl: @Tanjowen: how did you ladies hang them? Did you put the black out curtains within the window frame (like with a pressure mounted rod or something) and hang the regular curtains from above the window?

@lady grey: So, I started with these little clip things you can use to clip the blackouts to the curtains you already have. Then I got annoyed with that and went out and bought a double rod.

We put the black out roller shades from ikea in the new nursery and I think they work really well. There is a little bit of light that comes in at the edges, but we have curtains there and it is way darker than Liam's room has ever been, so it works. Plus, they were cheap.

IKEA roller blind for our bedroom & MIL sewed a blackout liner (at my request) onto the curtains she made the boys room.

I love the look of plantation shutters, but I'd worry they'd look like @Anagram's picture and not do much to actually block light.

My solution was not pretty, but I was working with what I had: Floor to ceiling black out panels that I could pull further than the window edges.
