Dd's first appointment is scheduled for two days from now. She's sixteen months. (Yes, I know, I'm late with this.)
Last doctor appointment she screamed the whole time. It was like she KNEW the shots were coming! I'm hoping the dentist goes better than that but I doubt it! Especially since she hates when anyone puts their finger in her mouth. Oh well!
How did your LO's first visit go? How has it been since then?

It was awful for both kids!
We went to a pediatric dentist and all they did was look and count but they both screamed.....
We started at age 2.
My DD will have her next check up in March and I am dreading it!
My 5 yr old finally stopped crying at 4.5!

@Mamaof2: You started at two? You mean I DIDN'T have to do this now? Lol. Our pedi said to go awhile ago so I've been having some mommy guilt over that especially since there's no real reason we haven't done it. I think it will be awful for lo too!

We started at 15 and 18 months. They both screamed bloody murder but the dentist said that's great since he got a good look. My DD is 5 and does great now. They took it really slow. First they just used the brush without the paste to get her used to the noise. They only started using the real paste on her 6 months ago. My 2 year old will have his second visit in a few weeks.

@googly-eyes: I know they say start at 1 but I waited until my kids had all their teeth!

We went at 15 months and it wasn't too bad. We didn't even go into the exam area, it was in the dentist's office area. He had a shorter chair for me to sit in and DS sat on my lap facing me then the dentist laid DS's head in his lap and counted his teeth. That was the extent of the exam. Then he talked to me about brushing and flossing (which we don't have to worry about just yet since there is so much space between DS's teeth). He goes back at 2.5 for a cleaning. That is the appointment I am nervous about!

E is 20 months and I've been avoiding going. He acts like I'm trying to yank all his teeth out each night when I brush them, so I'm sure going to the dentist will fly like a lead balloon.

One of the nurses at our pediatrician office told me last month that most of the pediatric dentists don't take children younger than 18 months, because they don't feel it is necessary, so I'm waiting until then. J is 16 months now, so I guess I better make an appt. soon. I'm dreading this! He hates when I try to look in his mouth checking for new teeth (his new thing is biting down hard...ouch!) so I can't imagine how it'll go at the dentist.

Seriously though, I see little ones all day long. Some do great, some scream. If they scream.. well at least I could see the teeth. The appointment itself is to get them acclimated and make sure there are no major issues.

Our pediatric dentist said before 2 all they really do is brush LO's teeth and let them get familiar with the office. So, that was our first visit, but LO wasn't interested in even having his teeth brushed despite the cartoons they had playing and the toys and balloons they tried to give him. Our second visit we were able to get his teeth brushed a bit and take a couple of photos of his teeth. Once they tried to polish, he freaked because of the taste of it (they had a huge selection of flavors and LO picked himself). Hoping next time goes better.

@Jenn23: The first office I called took her but maybe just because she is close enough to 18m? I don't know!

@Boogs: I figured it was just to get them used to it and check and make sure the teeth are coming in ok and whatever but I don't see the point in getting them used to the dentist. It's not like it's an everyday occurrence. She "knows" the doctor's office but that doesn't stop her from hating it, lol.

@googly-eyes: What I think is more important is being good about dental hygiene at home with brushing and flossing. It's sad, but little kids do get cavities and when we went last time, some kid was getting a root canal. 
I think getting kids used to the dentist helps positively reinforce good dental hygiene.

My LO goes every couple of months- she and DH visits/ we meet up for lunch. I work as a hygienist and look/brush them once a day. But really we attempt a cleaning at around 3, anytime before that like @yellowbird said is to get them used to the office.
