I am 11 1/2 weeks pregnant with my second and I am terrified to tell my boss. With my first, I felt punished for taking maternity leave and having been back at work since Sept. '12, things are just starting to feel normal again. I have been with my company for over 5 years and am a valuable employee but I feel like the news will put me on the chopping block.
I am beginning to show and need to tell her but I cannot put aside my fears. Any advice?

Wow sorry about that. It sucks when you have to feel guilty about being pregnant. I dont have much advice except dont be apologetic when you tell them.

Ugh. I'm so sorry. I know what that feels like... not that we're preggo, but I've often had to consider my career as far as future LOs. I guess I don't really have advice, but to forthright and don't let them judge you. They should NOT be able to make you feel guilty for being a working mother.

Thank you! I am going to try and set aside my fears and tell her. I hope I don't spend the whole weekend worrying about it.

@Protectlove: I just saw from your profile that you're a social worker - I would expect that to be a more family-friendly occupation! Does your boss have kids? She might be a little surprised because it might seem "earlier" than expected in her eyes and thus totally unexpected. Good luck though!

You are spot on! I have said that same statement more times than I can count! We work in elementary schools to support families, we are all about creating a positive change for families, yet when it comes to the employees family- its a completely different tune.
My boss does not have kids and I know that makes a big difference- she doesn't have a personal understanding. I am just so worried she is going to make it her mission to justify firing me.
Either way I need to inform her so she is prepared. Here goes nothing!

Is there an HR person you can go to with your concerns? Presumably if there's something on the books she would have a harder time discriminating against you (again)... Either way good luck and just do it like a bandaid and get it over with

I'm so sorry! I went back to work in April and I was pregnant with Baby 2 by July. I was a little embarrassed to tell my boss but he was supportive and our talk went well.
