I'd love to hear the rationale behind this craziness! What is it supposed to accomplish? And why are babies labeled legitimate or otherwise regardless?

Why is this important? Couldn't these people be working on something to improve the lives of children in TN instead of worrying about labels or how they are conceived?

... And thus, no such child shall be in line to succeed the crown.
Because, WHAT?!

I just told my husband (who was born via IVF) and he said, "but 'labeled' where? What, are they going to stamp your driver's license 'ILLEGITIMATE'?" But seriously, that's all kinds of F'ed up...

Also, how would the government even know? Wouldn't it violate patient privacy laws if doctors or hospitals are supposed to notify about that? Or are people expected to self-identify? So many questions...

This is all over my infertility and EA Facebook groups. It makes me so angry. I don't understand the point. My daughter is not illegitimate.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@MrsSCB: yeah I have no idea how the government would know. RE's report data about the success of IVF cycles, but no patient names are attached to that. And no where on the birth certificate do you have to check "IVF baby." 🙄

I still cannot fathom how a person can be considered illegitiment, no matter their origins.

Seems to be a thinly veiled attack on same-sex parents from what I understand

@Mrs. Yoyo: How dare same-sex parents spend their own money to bring a wanted and loved child into the world! The nerve...

If that's the case, then my two girls are the best illegitimate things I've got in my life right now. Bunch of morons.
nectarine / 2180 posts
No idea how they would establish illegitimacy but it could also have implications for inheritance, illigitement children do not automatically receive their share in the case of a death without a will.

What the WHAT?!?! Are they going to tattoo it on their butts? Are US lawmakers BORED? Do you guys not have any real problems left to solve?
nectarine / 2765 posts
What the actual F?! So now my girls are illegitimate? These people need to worry about real problems.

@mrbee: right?!
@jaguar: OMG she is so gorgeous!
@snarkybiochemist: Oh just ew.

What? Who has time to think about these things to propose a bill for it? Really, people, MYOB and get over yourself! This is totally absurd.

Because, of course, red states want the government to stay out of people's lives. Of course.

I don't see the point of this law, if a child is born and considered illegitimate, wouldn't adopting them negate the effects anyway? It seems just like throwing up roadblocks to keep same sex families from having families.
It's hard for me to come to terms with the fact that a segment of the American population actually believes in and supports this. I've been living in a bubble.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@looch: @travellingbee: I have certain family members that I never told that we did IVF because I knew they wouldn't approve and I didn't want to hear any negativity about my decision. They do know that DD was conceived via donor embryo but they don't know my DH and I did IVF with our genetic material first. They just believe IVF is wrong. So it's not hard for me to see that people would support this.

WHAT. THE. FUCK. I wish these rednecks would just come out with it and say what they want to say instead of spouting this back-handed bullshit.
@Mrs. Microscope: ha!

@Mrs. Pickle: when I see stuff like this, I want to know exactly which people vote for it--I wish they'd have to wear a sign on their forehead so we could all just be clear on who's a bigot and who wants to live without scientific, medical, and social progress.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@Mrs. Pickle: I just can't imagine why anyone would be against IVF. It boggles my mind!

I don't understand the point. Label where? And who would read the label and care about it? This is so bizarre to me. I am so never leaving my NE bubble.

This is the party of family values and pro-life though though clearly they really mean families and life they care about and no one else.
What will this even entail for people already born anyway? Like what are you going to do, revoke their legitimacy to life?? What good does this even do?

what is the point of this? and who is going to snoop around to find this info? so dumb.
nectarine / 2433 posts
WOW! I don't have any words for this...I'm quite sure there are many bigger fish to fry these days but let's propose the most ridiculous bill ever.
I'm curious how they would know a child was conceived with IVF? No where on any of the forms we signed or paperwork from when my daughter was born has this information, granted I am in Canada but still....

The sponsor of the bill wrote a FB post explaining:
I don't have enough brain cells left in the day to understand it. There is always an agenda, what is hers?
