I know there are several bees in the Houston area. I hope you're doing ok and not experiencing flooding. Check in and let us know you're ok, when you can!

We're high and dry in my neighborhood. My parents have about 3' of flooding in the lake where they live, but it's not in any of the houses.
It's been a crazy amount of water here and more to come this week. My heart goes out to all my fellow Texans who have been affected by this.

You're so sweet to check on us! Luckily there wasn't any flooding up near us (though I know there were a lot of homes without power). I think most schools and businesses are back up and running today. I knew the weather was going to be bad but I didn't know it was going to be THAT bad. Areas near the hill country were hit even worse. A family vacationing on the river was swept away (the entire house was swept away by the flood waters). The husband was found but the wife and two kids are still missing I think there are several others missing as well.

@mrs.shinerbock: @lawbee11: Glad to hear you're both ok! I was watching the Today show coverage this morning and it looks really awful. My parents are in north Texas, so they are getting a lot of gross weather but aren't affected by the flooding.

I'm in North Texas and we are safe from the flooding, just very water logged and feeling antsy with so many days of rain. I saw an infographic this morning that said it had rained 21 of 26 days in May! And oddly enough we aren't the wettest May yet (only #3). The current forecast is showing rain through Sunday!
The flooding in the Hill Country is tragic.

We're okay! I'm about an hour north of Houston. we can barely get in and out of our drive way and our yard is trashed but everything is good. The roads are fairly safe in our area right now, although the schools were delayed 2 hours due to weather. The situations in surounding areas is getting pretty scary though. Glad your parents are safe!

I don't live in Texas any more, but my rental house in Dallas has major water damage from the rainy season this spring--the amount of rain they've been getting is pretty unheard of.
Apparently, the balcony had a leak that caused the rainwater to run down and trickle over the back patio doors, rather than over the balcony edge...and with all the rain this spring, it slowly started to soak into the house itself. My renters didn't notify me (grrr), and now I have a whole back entrance of my house with wet and rotting drywall, puckered ceilings, and lots of problems.
We finally got a contractor there working on it now, but he keeps having to delay the balcony work because of the never ending rain. =(

You're so sweet to check in! Our place is fine (though I did get stuck in the floods Monday night).
I have two aunts and uncles who live on the Blanco River in Wimberley and lost everything. The waters blew out the back of their homes and reached 5.5 ft deep inside. The couch landed on the kitchen island! They're going to have to level everything and rebuild. BUT they got out in time, and that's lucky, all things considered.

@rattles: wow that's crazy about your family, so glad they are safe!
Our street flooded a bit since we are downtown but didn't reach the house or cars. LOs school was cancelled yesterday along with a lot of businesses downtown since you couldn't really get there from any of the roads.
This is definitely the most rain and damage I've seen in the 5 years we have lived here. More rain is happening now with lots of thunder, but hopefully not to the degree of yesterday!

My husband is in Houston right now for business and says it's nuts! He couldn't deplane for 2 hours after landing on Monday night because the storm was so bad they called all airport personnel back into the building. He said a lot of the area restaurants are closed too-- which is a problem when you're staying in a hotel! Stay safe, Houston bees!

@HTownMom: thanks, lady! I feel horribly for them. I'm glad everyone on here seems safe!

So glad to hear that everyone is safe!
We are fine up in Dallas - lots of rain and tornado sirens (which scare my non-Texan husband), but no damage.

I live north of Houston, and so far we're still high and dry, but the weather has been super scary the past two nights. I hope we'll be done after today.

@erinpye: glad he got to at least land, I wouldn't have wanted to be in the air on Monday with that rain! The city is back to running back normally today, so hopefully he has better luck!
@MrsLonghorn: Glad we don't get the tornado sirens in Houston like you guys do in Dallas, I think that would definitely scare me more than bad flooding and rain!
@rattles: I can't even imagine losing it all and starting over. I was talking to my husband and wondered if we have Flood insurance and how much because if you lost if all, what would be covered!
pomegranate / 3904 posts
@rattles: Wow! So glad they are ok, but that's terrible to lose everything like that!
I live in Houston, and we are doing pretty well. Our garage flooded, but luckily not our house. I'm actually back at work today, but not looking forward to having to drive home in the rain later.
The school at my office (we work with kids with disabilities, and the school downstairs is specifically for medically fragile children) is totally flooded It's really terrible, because all of their communication devices, chairs, computers, etc. were ruined.

I'm in Austin and there is flooding everywhere. Our animal shelter got surrounded and the kennels were flooding. We currently have a Jack Russell terrier being fostered here and I volunteered for the clean up effort.
We've had about 8 tornado warnings and one touched down not too far from here. It makes me nervous as we're on a construction site so lots of possible debris - dumpsters, bricks, etc.
So far so good in our house though. I will upload some pictures when I have a chance.

Thanks for thinking of us! It's been pretty crazy -- we actually got stuck downtown on Monday and eventually had to check into a hotel because every route we tried to take home was flooded. This is not a river but the highway I take to work shortly after the storm. We're lucky that we live on the second floor so no flooding. I feel so awful for everyone who has lost their belongings and for the lives lost

Thinking of the Texas bees! My sister lives in Houston and still doesn't have power!

There isn't any flooding in my part of Houston. We lost power for a few hours yesterday because of a downed power line. That's all I have to complain about so I am very lucky. We had to drive home in the storm Monday and it was scary. We made it home safely, but many people didn't. My hearts go out to their families. It stormed again early this morning and it's supposed to rain again. I hope it stops soon.

My hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted! We were ok this time around. Two weeks ago the storm hit my area in SE Houston really hard, and a poor man drowned. They found his body in the bayou right behind my neighborhood. Thankfully, my house has been ok through all this but so many others were not so lucky. I hope Mother Nature lets us dry out for a while now.

We're ok on the west side even though we got hit hard by the storm. Our neighborhood is newer and had good drainage and elevation. Yard flooded, but no problems.

I'm in Austin and we are fine here. There were several tornados that touched down in the surrounding areas. Part of the downtown area was flooded, lots of businesses flooded out. I've never seen this much rain for so long here. The large lake here has gone up 26 feet in 30 days. It's still not full, but the islands in the middle of it are starting to disappear. I'll try to find some pictures to post.
Eta: We got more rain today. 2 inches in 2 hours. Plus a mile away from me there was hail.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: omg, that's crazy! I was just in San Antonio a few weekends ago-- definitely didn't look like that. And those people need to move! Scary

I'm so glad to hear everyone on here seems okay! My parents are both originally from Houston and so I have a lot of family-- mostly elderly-- still there, and we've heard of at least two elderly family members who have been flooded out of their homes. One had to be rescued by the fire department! My grandparents' home was destroyed by a hurricane over a decade ago and my mom is having all those really depressing memories come back alive again from watching this on the news and hearing from our family

The DFW area took the hit overnight (still not as bad as Houston, Hill Country, etc), but we got 3-6 inches of rain and many roads are flooded this morning. We've now surpassed the May record rainfall in at least this area of Texas. And more rain is forecasted for the weekend.
nectarine / 2636 posts
We've had the 26th consecutive day of rain in the Austin area. We've passed the record for most rain in May since 1800-something. We're at 16.78 inches total for this month. Expecting more rain tomorrow.

We are in North Houston are okay. But not more than a mile from us the river is flooding homes.
We just got word that they are about to let water out of Lake Canyon. We (my parents) have a house on the river in New Braunfels and we think it might get close to flooding it. For sure it will take out the deck, outdoor firepit area and possibly the outdoor kitchen.
I'm still praying that they find some of these missing loved ones safe!

@nana87: where was the beach house? We lost ours on bolivar in 2008 to Ike. It's sad to not have the house. We didn't rebuild couldn't afford to rebuild anything compared to what we had. So we sold the land to the state. That way there will never be anything built there and will always be our beach!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Wow! That is wild. And what are those people doing?!?!
Been thinking of all the TX and OK bees as I hear the stories on NPR.

I'm in far west texas and it's fine here, although we have been under severe drought the last several years so the rain is welcomed. My dad lives off a lake in Far far north Dallas and it has been horrible flooding, the worst since 2007.

Praying and thinking of all those being affected by these horrible floods. There's patches of flooding in lots of area neighborhoods and roads are being blocked off. Luckily our cars are okay for now but my relatives who live in the suburbs of North Texas had their cars flooded overnight. The water drained into the sewer system by morning but the insides of their cars are all wet.

Austin will get some more rain this afternoon/tonight, but then our forecast is for at least 4-5 days of sun!
This was my backyard and door on Monday -- water level with the base of the door (about 5" off the ground). Unexpected pond, but luckily no damage.
