Where/how do you buy your Thanksgiving turkey? Pick up a frozen one beforehand? Get a fresh one the day before from the supermarket? Order a fresh one somewhere else?
We always get a frozen turkey from Publix and I always follow proper directions on how long to defrost it for in the fridge, but it always ends up still frozen solid that morning. I'm toying with the idea of getting a fresh one somewhere but I suspect my options are slim at this point!

I chose your first option, but really, I just show up and the turkey is in the oven 
I know my mom gets the frozen kind though, and I want to say she leaves it out longer than they say because it would still be frozen otherwise.
If I did Thanksgiving myself, I might try to get a fresh one from a farm or something... or maybe not.

We get ours from a local farm and let me tell you when we got the invoice I was shocked. I guess you get what you pay for...this better be one amazing turkey!

I placed a order for a free range hormone free turkey from a local farm. It's def a lot more expensive but soooo worth it. I love turkey so we're def buying a few supermarket cheapies for the freezer.
@tlcbaby: it totally is!!! I don't think we're ever doing a store bought for thanksgiving any more.
You can try calling, doesn't hurt to try!

Looks like it will just be DH and I this year, so we will get a small turkey from the supermarket. Maybe just the breast. Or some legs, and eat them medieval-style. Love me some dark meat!

I prefer free range. Usually get from local farmer or go to a butcher.

I havent cooked turkey for thanksgiving yet. Weusually alway spend it at someone elses place so I just take a few side dishes. If i was cooking my own turkey I would want to cook it from fresh rather than frozen

My work gives all employees and volunteers a frozen turkey the week before Thanksgiving!

DH has cooked ours for the past few years using Alton Brown's recipe and it's delicious!

I just ordered my turkey this morning actually. A small local market offers turkeys each year, and I've been ordering from them. This year Fred III (I've named my turkeys Fred) will be organic. They have had natural, heirloom (yeah, I know), and organic turkeys in the past, so I do like the option.

We are getting ours fresh from Whole Foods this year. We usually buy a fresh one from a local farm, but decided to give Whole Foods a try!

@BKCaribBaby: The farm we get our turkey from says they are a "heirloom" variety. I have no idea what that means as it relates to turkeys; but they are huge and they are tasty!

@tlcbaby: Yeah, since I've never purchased a whole turkey, I wouldn't really know what to expect, but I have a feeling my "ooh I want a nice natural free range turkey" comments would go out the window when my credit card came out.

just ordered mine online today for pickup at whole foods on the tuesday before. actually ended up buying a breast and lots of drums and thighs- much easier to cook than a whole turkey in our tiny kitchen.

@regberadaisy: I ordered a turkey from WF but then got an email from the farmers market saying this is the last week to get heritage turkeys from the farm...I might do it! We did this a few years ago and it was awesome!
