A brined turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, gravy, ALL THE STUFFINNNNGGG, corn (the only time I really want canned corn), cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie with lots of whipped cream, and spongey soft white rolls to mop everything up. For a green veg, I usually just stir-fry some green beans very simply so there's something crunchy and green on the table.

It used to be stuffin muffins (until I gave up gluten)
Now all I'm looking forward to this year is mashed potatoes. I'm not a huge fan of turkey

Turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, stuffing, gravy, corn dish, green bean casserole, rolls.

I don't care about the meal portion at all (I think cooking a turkey is beyond most home cooks that I know), but I love desserts. For me, it's got to be pumpkin cheesecake and cranberry apple cobbler.
pineapple / 12566 posts
Big fluffy dinner rolls, like Parker House rolls. A non-nutty, not overly pumpkin dessert.

Must have: Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, pumpkin pie.
Nice to have: Mac & cheese, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, lots of other pies!
Want to have this year: Corn pudding - yum!

This year we are making: turkey and gravy, homemade cranberry sauce, super fluffy white rolls, stuffing (with sausage), mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, honey and rosemary glazed carrots, roasted asparagus and creamed onions.
What reeeeeeeally makes it for me is dessert though. We are having 9(ish) people (we usually end up with a couple last minute stray friends too) and I am making at least 4 pies- 2 pumpkin, an apple, and maple bourbon pecan. I get sad if I don't have lots of leftover pie for breakfast.

I'm vegetarian, so I don't care about turkey or gravy, but gotta have mashed potatoes!! My brother and I used to spar growing up about sweet potatoes vs white potatoes--white alllll the way, lol.
Other sides we typically have--stuffing, cranberry sauce, some kind of green veggie like brussels sprouts or green beans. And pies (apple and pecan are usually the favorites in my family; we've made a flourless chocolate one in the past that's gluten free and delish). I'm not crazy about pie, but homemade whipped cream on top is the best!
And if you're going to have any vegetarians, I def recommend some kind of protein...We've had lentils with roasted beets as a side beofre that's really nice and fit well with the rest of the meal, or just some simple grilled tofu. Otherwise it's usually a carbtastic meal, which is delicious but not so healthy or filling

Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls, and pumpkin pie are the necessities! We usually have some kind of salad, mac n cheese, and apple pie also.

I don't know if it's a regional thing or what, but we always do a strawberry Jello salad for holiday events, it's really tasty.
My favorites are the yams, pumpkin pie, and fluffy rolls
I prefer ham on Thanksgiving

This is what our menu looks like:
- two turkeys (one roasted, one brined and fried)
- GF stuffing
- Candied Yams with raisins and marshmallows

- fluffy GF biscuits
- crustless pumpkin pie
- GF rhubarb cobbler
- GF cookies
- assorted GF fruit pies
We have several gluten free folks in our family so we make everything GF to help there be a stress free holiday.

@FaithFertility: it is a huge spread and everyone leaves with leftovers. Even when my BIL can't make the meal he sends containers for left overs to be taken back for him.

Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes with marshmellows, green bean casserole, stuffing, white rolls (sometimes onion rolls - great for leftover sandwiches), and cranberry sauce. For dessert - pecan pie and pumpkin pie.

Mashed potatoes and gf stuffing to pour gravy over!
Last year my BIL made mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes. It just felt incomplete, haha.

Green bean casserole. Mashed potatoes with only butter, salt and heavy cream.

Am I really the first person to say wine?!
I fully believe in cocktails for everyone (well, everyone who is 21!) when I'm hosting. And appetizers. That way no one is too bothered if the turkey/vegetarian main course I *think* will be done at 4pm is really done at 6pm.
I also feel like it's not Thanksgiving without cranberries. The kind with whole cranberries, OJ and sugar, not the canned stuff! Oh, and pumpkin pie, the recipe is on the back of the Libby's canned pumpkin.

my 3 must haves:
Baked macaroni and cheese
Sage sausage cornbread stuffing
Giblet gravy

Soo I mean, you have the basics of rolls, mashed potatoes and turkey.
For my family, we also have sweet potatoes with a brown sugar and pecan topping and a cranberry/marshmallow/pineapple mixture called 'Pink Stuff'. I'm pretty sure it is dessert pretending to be a fruit salad, but it and the sweet potatoes are always gone first.

Turkey and gravy
Mashed potatoes
Green bean casserole
DH would say jello pretzel salad, which I just don't understand.
pear / 1737 posts
Roasted vegetables-particularly potatoes and beets-nice and crispy. My family is vegetarian so we have tofurkey. Before that existed/we knew about it, we used to have a nut roast/loaf. I also need mashed potatoes and gravy!
I don't care for dessert and usually load up on dinner so there isn't room in my belly for it anyway.

Mashed potatoes are a must. DH's family didn't have them last year and I was so bummed. Booze is always a must as well. Also dessert besides pumpkin or apple pie. Not everyone likes though, aka me.

My thanksgiving favorites are:
-turkey
-yeast rolls
-white gravy (hate brown gravy, the southern girl in me needs cream gravy)
-dressing (not stuffing), green beans
spicy sweet potatoes (I cannot tolerate sweetened sweet potatoes/yams)
-a salad
-a cranberry relish (no canned jelly).
-Desserts needs to be pumpkin pie, apple pie, and some kind of chocolate dessert.

@MrsRcCar: what fluffy GF biscuits are you going to make? I love biscuits, but have only made the GF Betty Crocker kind...

MUSTS for me: Mashed potatoes, and sweet potato casserole with marshmallows! Oh, and pumpkin & apple pie!
grapefruit / 4712 posts
@hellobeeboston: we found a new recipe for scratch made yeast dough. It's delicate and time consuming but sooo good.
grapefruit / 4988 posts
My must haves are:
turkey (with skin)
stuffing (prefer Stouffers)
gravy
cranberry sauce (from a can, without chunks)
Now that I'm older, we often get things like homemade gravy, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, but because I grew up eating the processed stuff from the grocery store, those tastes are the ones I miss.
