We have the crane and just do what it tells us to do; I think to clean with vinegar. We use it every night in the winter and probably clean it every 2 weeks. We've used this all last winter with this routine and no issues so far.

ETA: we also just use tap water. and I like that it looks cute

We have a Crane penguin in D's room. It gets emptied every few days and then I clean it with vinegar every 2-3 weeks. This will be our 3rd winter with it and I've already had to replace it once (Crane replaced it for free!). I couldn't find a Crane adorable I liked for Babygirl's room, and was going to get the drop shape, but the reviews on it weren't great. I ended up getting this one for her room instead. I like that it has a built-in nightlight and an oil diffuser. She's not due yet, so we haven't used it, so I can't offer personal testimony. I really wanted one with a built in hygrometer so it would shut off when the proper humidity is reached instead of just continually running. And it got great reviews!

Venta Airwasher = AMAZING

It's not a cool mist one, doesn't ever get too damp, lasts ages, easy to clean.... It's a life saver for small spaces.

We have a crane drop and a vicks no filter cold mist. They both work just fine. We use distilled water only and then clean with vinegar 1-2x month during winter.
