This is why I always encourage people to buy a super cheap carseat for travel. Anyway, I immediately had my bosses buy a new one but now we have to deal with getting money from the airline. What a hassle!

How did they "break" it and how was it checked?

We bought the travel bag that goes with our car seat and it comes equipped with a guarantee to protect your seat

@mediagirl- It was regular checked (vs being gate checked) and I attached a picture.

ugh that's awful!
We're planning to take the carseat on the plane - I wouldn't check it cause who knows what goes on back there! I wouldn't trust them.

I agree with not taking your regular seat if you are checking it. We checked ours and they lost it on the way back. Thank goodness it was our backup seat and our other one was in the car at the airport.

@mrs.shinerbock: Whoa! Good thing they didn't lose it on the way there!!
@travelingnanny: That's really crazy that they broke the strap!! Those things are strong!!!

I believe that I've read that you aren't supposed to check carseats ever. Since they have to be replaced after an accident, and checked items aren't handled with "gentle hands" haha, there's no way of knowing how much jostling/falls etc happened and if they damaged the seat.

I hope you learned how to do a seatbelt install!
eta: that's the LATCH belt, right?

How did the strap get torn out like that? What airline were you on? I'm just curious because when we flew with our seat we pulled the latch straps as tight as possible and locked them into their slots. The straps got tucked in and then the seat was wrapped in plastic that the airline provided. They wrapped it for us.

Soooo annoying, I'm sorry! We gate-checked our stroller and hey announced when we landed that due to a large number of strollers, they were all sent directly to baggage pick-up. When we got our stroller, it was missing a wheel! Jet Blue was so unhelpful too It's the worst!

@prettylizy: what bag did you use/what car seat do you have?
Sorry! My dad was a baggage handler for 40 years and he has told me stories about how careless most of the handlers are with all luggage. What did you do? Wait at the airport while someone went to get a new carseat?
kiwi / 649 posts
I wasn't traveling with them but normally the airlines put a bag over it for us.
@looch- What do you mean? I do know how to properly install our carseat.
@trailmix- the airline beat the snot out of our stroller. I was traveling every two weeks and the stroller didn't even last a year
@matador84- When they were picked up at the airport we used the vehicle that already had a carseat installed.
@mediagirl- It was US airways

@travelingnanny: Was that the LATCH strap that broke? It looked like it was and my comment was directed to being able to do a seatbelt install without it.
If you could, what's the problem (obviously other than the fact that the LATCH belt is busted). The seat is still usable.

Holy cow! I'm so sorry that happened to your car seat and I'm glad you were able to get a replacement!
I think looch was asking if you were able to install the car seat with the seat belt instead of using the LATCH system. Sometimes using the seat belt it is not as tight as LATCH

@looch- Oops, I'm sorry! Yes it was. I was just a paranoid that something else might have broken that we might not have been able to detect. Drivers in my state are extremely reckless (they run through red lights all the time) and I want to make sure the kiddo is as safe as I can make her. That's why I asked my bosses to get us a new car seat.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@travelingnanny: Yeah, no worries. The point is that you could use the seat for the drive home, as long as you knew how to do the seatbelt install.
I think that's so important, I didn't realize it until I was forced to learn it on the spot. I wish I had spent time beforehand practicing.

Crazy.
This is exactly why we decided to buy a travel car seat.
coconut / 8475 posts
@travelingnanny: I honestly think you should have bagged it. The car seat gets sent through a bunch of rolling belt lines and the straps (if dangling) will obviously get stuck in all those places and can get torn. I wouldn't depends on an airline to bag it for me (I've never seen them do that PLUS I wouldn't trust them to). I'm sorry about your seat.

We have traveled a bunch in the last 10 months with LO and always rent a car seat with our rental car. We have used various rental companies and they have all had rear facing car seats available and forward facing available. It is a couple of bucks extra each day but it saves on spending money on a broken seat!

We just checked ours and double bagged it and it was fine. But we made sure the straps were tucked in.
@kjpugs: as we were waiting to de board two of our plans we watched as they literally dropped the strollers from the plane to the ground. One had the canopy pop off (wasn't in a bag since it had been gate checked). So honestly I would think/question if actually checking the seat (with a bag) versus gate checking is really all that much better.
grapefruit / 4291 posts
I guess that's why they don't recommend checking your seat, I would also wonder what damage was done to the seat shell due to the force exerted on the strap...
grapefruit / 4862 posts
@T.H.O.U.: I've heard horror stories. I was panicked enough about gate checking my stroller (which we bought the gate check bag for.) I don't think I could ever bring myself to check a carseat. But the only place we're flying to ever would be NJ where my mom has one for her, so we're lucky in that way.
