Apparently the new B word is Bossy, and Sheryl Sandberg (COO of Facebook) has launched a campaign to ban the word (at least when referring to young girls).

A whole bunch of powerful women, including Madeleine Alrbight, Michelle Obama, Jane Lynch and Beyonce have pledged to ban the word.

I listened to part of an interview with Ms. Sandberg on NPR yesterday, and she was explaining that as early as 5th grade girls who were leading were called "bossy" and boys were called "leaders". She wants to stop the use of the derogatory term because it discourages women from seeking power or leaderships positions for fear of being labeled "bossy".

I have read a few opposing articles, though, (many from women) who argue that a) many men are also called bossy (ehh..) and b) girls should be taught to develop a thick skin, because bossy is probably one of the nicest words that a powerful woman will be called in her life.

What are your thoughts? Do you think bossy is a word that we should be actively discouraging, or should we be teaching our daughters (and sons!) to disregard or shake off the term, and any other derogatory terms that might be thrown at them?
