There are many benefits to continuing reading aloud to your children as they get older. I wouldn't stop just because he is getting older. Teachers do it into high school! You can stop to explain difficult topics, help pronounce, define vocabulary and to model language, and build their literacy.

My dad read to me and my brother until middle school! He would read long adult fantasy and science fiction books (which once I re-read them as an adult I realizes, often got edited for appropriateness). We were about your kids age when he read us the hobbit. Later he also read us all three lord of the rings books and Thr Dragon Riders of Pern books by Anne Mcaffrey. I know it was hard for him when we no longer wanted to do "stories" but he did instill in both of us a love of books and reading. My brother and I both read each night before bed through high school, and even most nights in college, and now as adults:

I remember that my parents used to read as stories for a really long time. Definately until my youngest sibling could read well too, so I was probably 11? Just like @OhCaptain: my parents started reading classic chapter books to us and we would often read the same book for months. It is also one of my favorite memories.

My son is only 3 so I dunt have any experience but... I still like it when people read to me! As long as the child sometimes reads by themselves, I could see reading to then going on for a long time.

Never!! When children get older, they can read to there parents,siblings, friends, etc, but they still enjoy getting read too.

I've always loved reading so I never really needed any encouragement to read on my own. I don't remember when it stopped being a daily thing be we often read chapter books as a family around Christmas time we'll into junior high. As long as your child is willing to listen, never stop!

I think my mom stopped reading out loud when I was like 9 and my brother was 12, mostly because she picked a book that we had no interest in so she gave up, haha. But that's pretty old, and we were both very voracious readers on our own by then. I'll read for as long as I can with lo!

I think my parents stopped sometime in elementary school. I liked to read on my own in my spare time.

I think we'll keep going for a long time. It's our default entertainment in the evening during dinner clean-up and LO has plenty of other times during the day to read on his own.

I guess when I stop putting them to bed?

Never! My mom read to us until we were all middle school age. And when I was in high school and on a couple family vacations after that, my mom and I read novels aloud to each other. If we lived closer, we'd still be doing that! I'll read to my kids as long as they enjoy it.

Never! I think my grandfather read to me on a regular basis until I was around 10 or so. And my mom sporadically for several more years. And that was in addition to reading a ton on my own. Even now, I like being read to, though I don't have much opportunity. I can't wait until my son is old enough for me to read more complex, chapter books to him.
