What subject/what age group would you like to teach? Elementary(k-9) and Secondary (6-12) are very different.

In Ontario (Canada), due to government cuts, it's near impossible to find a permanent job right now. But passion is key and if you are willing to do substitute teaching for a couple of years, it's a way to get your foot in the door.

I don't know what it's like outside of Ontario...Every province in Canada is different and I'm sure it's very different in other countries.

Can you do an internet search to see if there is a Faculty of Education in your city's university or college?

I live in DFW too and teach elementary school in a medium size district. I went through the traditional university way of getting certified to teach. You can get an alternative certification in the state of Texas if you have a college degree in something outside of education.

My first advice would be look for an alternative certification program. I'm sure google would provide you a lot of good options.

My second advice would be to sub if possible to get your foot in the door and to network yourself. I know a girl who is doing the same exact thing with a baby your age too!

Also, get your ESL certification it's pretty much a must these days in DFW districts.

Each state has different requirements for teaching certificates. I would begin by looking at your state's education department website to see what would be required.

There is definitely a lack of teaching jobs in the New York metro area where I live but other places in the country might not be hurting so badly.

I'm a second grade teacher but in Canada so I'm sure the path to becoming a teacher varies. I LOVE my career and IMO its the perfect balance between staying home and working out of the home.

I did a 4 year Bachelors of Science, 2 year Bachelor of Education, and 2 year Masters of Ed (though I did my MEd while teaching full time).

I was very fortunate and got a job literally the day after I graduated, but it has gotten tougher (at least in Canada) depending on the location.

It's such a rewarding career! It is very tiring and emotionally draining at times but so so worth it.

i think it's very much dependent on the state and grade level you want to teach. in MA you need a masters degree (you can work for a few years with a bachelors but you must complete it within the time allowed). i went for elementary ed and it was a requirement that i have a double major, so i was a sociology & education major.

DH is changing careers to special education, his previous degree is in communications, so he has to take a post bac ed program, some of these classes will transfer toward his masters, and he has to complete the MTEL exams (these are the MA teacher tests, he's done with half, but will take the other half when he finishes the classes), then he can get a job with probationary contract until he finishes his masters. right now he works in a special ed classroom and once he's finished his requirements he can take over as a head teacher.

My sister just went through this recently. She has a degree in English from Texas A & M. After graduated she went home to the DFW area and ended up going to UNT in Denton for her teaching certification. It took one year of classes + one semester of student teaching. She's at the high school level though. She finished student teaching in December and was offered a job (at a different school district) beginning in January. I don't know if that's typical, but it's not impossible! Good luck!
