Socks in some way protect the shoes from deteriorating. Having holes doesn't do that so I say throw them out because they are cheaper to replace than the shoes. Or find other ways to reuse them such as dusting rags. Or leg warmers.

but what about when your toe sticks through? Doesn't that make you crazy?

@mrbee: good! I was having this same conversation with DH earlier today, so it's funny you brought it up.

To me non-holey socks mean I love DH. People at his job do see them often, so I feel like he isn't being taken care of of I send him around looking all scruffy.

I remember my mom would mend all the holes in our socks... she'd put the sock over a light bulb and fix all the holes. With DH, I throw all his holey socks away. Since we're in Japan, we always have to take our shoes off and I don't think it's nice if DH has holes in his socks. A lot of restaurants have tatami rooms so you have to take your shoes off too. If we go to visit anyone, we have to take our shoes off.

I have holes in some of my socks. Right at the ball of my foot though, none with holey toes. It doesn't bother me. The socks are not worn out elsewhere and I can't feel the holes. I always wear through socks and shoes the fastest at the balls of my feet. I don't know if DH has holey socks but I do throw them out if they start looking dingy.

@mrbee: there is if someone sees them. Like going back to that whole thread about taking off your shoes in someone else's house. Wouldn't you be self conscious if they saw all these holes in your socks? DH has some holey socks and always thinks ahead for situations like that as to not wear the ones with holes in them and feel embarrassed.

I was thinking in the previous thread that if someone said to my husband something about his holey socks he'd go on a rant about wastefulness.

We have come to an agreement that because we have so many socks from over the years (my dad likes to buy my husband socks), that unpaired holey socks can be tossed.

We once had a guest over whose entire heel was showing through his sock! THOSE need to be thrown out!

Once hubby's socks get holes, we make them dusters or use for other household cleaning. So we reuse them

I darn socks. Does that make me weird? At least for ones in the toe area. Heel holes are pretty hard.

We live in Montana so it's Smart Wools all the way. Those are hard to wear through!

This reminds me once My x boyfriend (then boyfriend) and I went to a house where they asked to please take your shoes off at the door. Well when he took his shoe off his sock had a hole so big that ALL OF HIS TOES were literally sticking out of the hole.. so it was like half a sock? I just started laughing. It was funny.

Look, my husband, you shouldn't impersonate people on the internet. If you like holes in your socks, fine. I'll just try to ignore how sad and tragic it looks. You didn't have to come here, pretend to be Mr Bee, and post this.

i go through them while I do laundry and toss any "left behind" pairs and holey ones. DH always seems to wear them out in the heel (thus causing blisters) & he's on his feet all day at work, = utter agony.

I don't mind sock holes! I also don't mind non-matching socks--I just throw all my singles into a drawer and pull 2 out that are roughly the same height. DH cannot understand this and I think is mildly horrified by it; good thing we each have our own drawer. But when he does laundry he matches my socks for me.
