I'm pretty sure yesterday was the last time I'll be able to wear P in the Baby K'tan as she was squirming herself every which way trying to bend backwards and turn to see everything while grocery shopping.
I think it's time to move up to something that secures her squirmy self a bit more AND that I can backwear with.
You Ergo mommas, is it easy to backwear with the Ergo?

I have never tried any backwear, but I have read that the Beco Butterfly is the easiest for backwearing, especially if you are putting her on by yourself. Have you checked that one out?

I've had quite the struggle with baby carriers. Started with the ktan, but it never seemed to fit right.
Then bought the butterfly but the fit was strange and it was hard to buckle so returned that too.
Found a used ergo and love it! so easy! havent tried the back carry though

Is there a Babywearing International group near you? We went to a meeting and they usually have tons of different styles and brands to try out. We will likely end up getting a Kinderpack.

@runsyellowlites: They definitely have it on Amazon, so you should be able to order it and return if you don't like it. You should just order a whole bunch and return the ones you don't like.

@Foodnerd81: I wish I could get away with that. DH would never let me drop a few hundred buck on carriers even IF I was returning some of them. He'd look at me like I had a third head if I even tried! lol

@runsyellowlites: haha-- fair enough! I've done it before (with J Crew bathing suits, important stuff) and it's hard to stomach dropping 3 or 400 dollars, even if you are only going to keep $50 worth of it!

I backwear a ton in the ergo. Like, everyday for months for naps. I can get her on by myself no problem, although it's easier with help, especially if she wants to put her arms out now that she's bigger. I just do it over the bed, so if I did drop her, she would be safe.

After some practice and after she was a bit older, she did great getting on/off my back in the ergo.

QuirkyBaby (quirkybaby.com) also has a carrier rental program. I bought my Moby from them, and the new owner has been really helpful in my quest for the perfect carrier for the new baby.
We have a Beco Gemini, which is similar to the Ergo in that you can do a back carry but there is no internal structure to put the baby in, so it involves a lot of scootching and holding baby on your hip over the couch. To be honest, I was never brave enough to do it on my own.

I can get her into it by myself when I'm putting her on by my bed (for extra protection in case I drop her). It takes awhile, though, and she doesn't like it too much (she prefers the front facing carry in the Gemini).

Depending on your LOs age I found transitioning from a soft carrier (we had a baby bjorn) to a structured mountain/hiking style carrier was best for our LO. She struggles in her Ergo and loves her Vaude carrier. She's 19 months. Might be something to think about if you are thinking about the Ergo for outdoors. 
Plus I don't trust myself putting her on my back on my own in the Ergo. But with this carrier it's so easy.

@runsyellowlites: I've been able to backcarry DD on my Ergo on my own, but it's not the easiest and I always get nervous that she'll slip off in the process. Most of the time, I'll only backcarry if I have DH around to help me strap her in.

This is going to sound vain, but whatever...I love the Ergo for wearing him on the front, but am embarrassed to back wear him sometimes. Basically, Ergo front wearing = hiding the belly pooch still left from pregnancy, and back wearing = lets make this muffin top look as bad and noticeable as it possibly can. It's comfortable and he likes it, but imagine a tying a string around a water balloon and that's what my belly looks like in it. Now, if you're super skinny, have at it.

@Foodnerd81: I swear, I feel so skinny with that huge padded belt to suck it all in and the baby to cover it up.
@prettylizy: Ha Ha! It's so true. Even when I'm a size 2, I have a belly pooch (courtesy of my mother's genetics), and I think it would still look terrible. I've heard you can tighten the belt realllly high (like under boob high) instead of on the hips, though, so I might try this next time.

@IcebergMom: Agree - we have a small hiking pack - Kokopax and he likes it - and it's very easy to get on/off and he has fallen asleep in it a few times, so I know it's comfy!

@bree72: I definitely don't think that's vain! My friend uses a Mei Tei and she ties it up under the breast so baby is higher and she can hand him munchies. If I back wear I know I'd much rather have P higher so that's what I'd do.

seriously, the most useful gift I ever got. I love love love it, but it's not the easiest to use wearing it from the back at least that what I find. I feel like the top strap makes me feel like I'm being hung. I know some people don't use it when carrying the baby from the back, but I feel less secure when I don't use it.
